| [Home Network] Problem with Westell DSL / Linksys connectivity
I have a Westell DSL MODEM (890-220030) with a Linksys Wireless-G router with a 4-port switch. Until last night everything was working fine with 2 wired computer connections plus one wireless connection. The connectivity dropped for no apparent reason. I waited until this morning to diagnose. Linksys diagnostice say that it cannot obtain an IP from the server. All connections appear normal based on the lights on the MODEM and switch. If I connect the MODEM directly to the WinXP PC, I get connectivity on the one computer. If I run the Westell diagnostics, everything tests OK except that it fails on the PING to fastaccess.com. I don't recall if that is the same result I got when I first hooked it up a year or so ago. ATT was not able to solve the problem over the phone, although I did not know about the PING failure at that time. Any suggestions? |

It could be the Linksys Automatic MTU issue. »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »I have disconnects, erractic speeds, and PPPoE connection failures? |

| I did read elsewhere that the ping test built into the Westell diagnostics doesn't work anymore, and suggested I try a ping to 65.83.242.107. I tried that, and it timed out too. That is with the Linksys router/switch not in the circuit at all. I can ping other sites with no problem, so long as I am connected directly to the Westell MODEM. |

| reply to FarmerCharli How is your modem/router combo setup? Are you using bridged mode on the modem and letting the router do the PPPoE negotiation? That is the way you should have it.
If you do have it setup with the modem in bridged, are you getting any error messages from the linksys router about the PPPoE authentication. |

The MODEM and the LinkSys router/switch are both set for PPPoE. If I set the MODEM for bridged, then I lose the connection when connected directly from PC to MODEM. I have not changed that setting, but maybe that's my problem. In the past I don't recall changing that setting when going back and forth between direct and through the switch. BTW. My local network does work fin; I can see one computer from the other one. |

As you suggested, I changed the MODEM setting to Bridged, left the LinkSys on PPPoE reconnected the router/switch, and everything is working again. I can't figure out how the MODEM setting got changed from bridged. Thanks for the help. I got better help from you for free than I got in an hour on the phone with AT&T. |

| reply to FAQFixer I read your MTU FAQ and did the Ping tests you suggested. The number I came up with was 1270 + 28 = 1298. Does that make sense to you. Would I likely see a major difference if I compare speed tests with the automatic and manual settings, or is this something that would just cause problems sporadically. |
