| reply to Sempronius My household is looking into this, I know Beanfield offers dark fiber straight to the home or office, however I don't have any pricing info because it's call for a quote type of thing.
So yeah maybe I'll call and get the quote, and post some rates. |

But for people that rent, and people that don't plan on staying in their current house for that long it wouldn't be worth it. |

I understand that it's a tough call if you're renting I live in an owned household so it's not a big deal for me.
If you're in a position where it's financially feasible and affordable then I would still say do it if only for posterity and future tenants.
I would if I was renting. |

Currently, a 400-home customer owned network is being tested in downtown Ottawa, Canada, say Wu and Slater, going on »»»
Trunk fiber and splice points for the distribution of strands down individual streets have already been deployed.
The experiment is spearheaded by Bill St. Arnaud, Chief Research Officer at CANARIE, which is a nonprofit group devoted to advanced network research in Canada. He has been promoting the customer-owned network model for over a decade and is now attempting to demonstrate the general business case for it.
To accomplish this task St. Arnaud came up with an inventive idea: selling fiber as part of a joint partnership between a specialized construction company named P2P Fiber and electricity resellers.
In Canada, electricity resellers purchase power from wholesale providers and sell directly to customers. To differentiate themselves, they offer packages that might, for example, put together electricity with cheap long distance telephone service.
St. Arnauds idea was to sell cheap electricity and fiber together. The electric company sells the fiber connection along with its electricity contract, and collects payments over five years for it, through electricity charges of around two cents/kwh. St. Arnaud calls this approach green broadband because the surcharge also creates an incentive to reduce energy usage.
So seems this is already working in Ottawa.
Hmmmm I didn't read all the article, but i will later tonight.
very very interesting. So its not as crazy as some you might suggest. |

| I don't think its crazy at all. If we are looking for a home for some economic stimulus dollars via an infrastructure funding package, what could be better?
Apart from rebuilding some bridges that are about to drop on our cars of course...

Now which company can you think of to entertain the owners of local fiber with their experience in delivery? Or enterain a community with the benifits of laying their own?
I can think of a couple of companies who can maybe go through a costing excersize here... [hint] |

| Sounds like a good deal to me. Rocky has all the back end already. Wireless is hard work.
But I have a nasty feeling that fibre is hard work too. The Bell guys out fixing overhead lines this winter don't look too happy.

| reply to Sempronius I think I would pay a considerable amount of money to install fibre to my house (considerable being 2-3K), provided my monthly access fee was equal to or less then what I am paying now. The initial outlay obviously compensated with by much much higher speeds!

George Actually working with Fibre with our PLC backbone, we've found it just as solid as copper EXCEPT at the connectors which are getting better.

| Seriously, there are a lot of companies around that wouldn't need much of a push to start laying some fibre or create some other kind of high performance network.
All it would take is some seed money.
Unfortunately the govt tends to adopt a 'single provider' model on these projects, which is often NOT the efficient way to get fast results.
I've had exactly this discussion with Tony Clement personally once, and with his staff countless times.
They just don't get it. And we still have crappy broadband.

And look at the savings to the consumers compared to what consumers are currently paying ISPs. |

They're top-notch.
