| reply to aaronwt Re: Would You Like VOOM on FiOS?
said by aaronwt :I don't care about the VOOM channels. I'm surprised they are still around. Looking the national HD channel line-up table at avsforum, there is no other major service provider carrying Voom these days other than CableVision after Dish dropped Voom. In the current economic climate, you have to wonder if Voom can survive? Maybe with a reduced set of channels?. IIRC, Dish reportedly wanted Voom to collapse to 5 channels in return for keeping them in the Dish line-up, but Voom didn't go along with that - but I may be wrong on that bit
But I do not want Verizon to take up the bandwidth with the 15 Voom channels in their current QAM only implementation. Not that many unused channels left in the QAM channel line-up I see, depending on how many QAM channels Verizon has to reserved for the locals and PEGS. |

| reply to keyboards It really is self-defeating and silly on CV's part. It would be like Time Warner saying, "Ok, no one but TWC systems can have HBO, CNN, TBS, TNT, TCM, etc." TW shareholders would revolt - and rightly so. Hell, for that matter, the Big 4 broadcast networks often sell shows their studios produce to the other broadcast nets. The Dolans are a breed unto themselves when it comes to greed. |

| reply to Grim Reaper voom has some good stuff, like monster, kung fu, gallery. problem with voom when i had it was 1) too many channels w/ not enough content; 2) too many reruns; 3) less than stellar pq.
if they can consolidate down to 3-4 channels, improve content, and give full 1920x1080 res and high bitrate, then yeah. but they won't b/c the dolans suck. look how they run the knicks. losers. |

| reply to Grim Reaper I would like to see the voom lineup, I enjoyed it on dish network when I had them, and when I canceled my service I was asked why, I made sure to let them know I wasn't happy about them removing those channels and they started to go on about how its in the contract. I basically said, thats fine and I'm not saying that I'm taking you to court or not paying my bill, but its one of the reasons why you're one customer lighter after this phone call, they didn't seem to grasp that and kept trying to defend their "right" to remove them. Whatever I'm done with that mess.
I don't understand really without researching... who wants it consolidated down and why? I briefly saw something about QAM, is vze running out of space for channels? Is there a limit on the video content they can send and how close are they if there is a limit to hitting it?

| reply to Grim Reaper According to the VOOM website, the VOOM suite of 15 HD channels are available to all cable and satellite outlets. Also, I think the rules are that if a channel is broadcast on satellite, Cablevision can't legally prevent FIOS or any other provider from getting these channels.
I would love if FIOS TV adds these channels. I am sure Verizon has tried to obtain these from Rainbow Holdings(owned by Cablevision) but they are probably charging an arm and a leg. |

| reply to Grim Reaper I too would love to see VOOM added to the FiOS TV lineup. I enjoyed them for almost three years via VOOM DBS and Dish Network. However, there are a few major obstacles preventing this from happening:
1. VOOM is suing EchoStar (aka Dish Network) for, what they claim, illegally terminating their 15-year affiliate agreeement in which VOOM was getting a 2005 "Premium" price for all 15 VOOM HD channels. Although some of us would have loved to have seen the channels sold a la carte (Monsters, WorldSport, etc.), VOOM would have been forced to offer the same terms & conditions (pricing/packaging) to Dish Network under the affiliation agreement.
2. Marketing VOOM HD a la carte, or for less than what they were charging Dish Network, would currently undermine their lawsuit against EchoStar....as far as damages are concerned. It would appear that VOOM is content with taking their chances on a big win ($$$) against E* in the courts (probably 2010).
3. Even if VOOM were willing to remarket/revamp the VOOM lineup and schlock their wares, I doubt Cablevision (owners of VOOM HD) would permit the folks at Verizon to use their own product against them - they are already having a tough enough time keeping their cable customers. |

| reply to Grim Reaper I actually cancelled dish when they got rid of the voom channels. It was the only reason i kept dish. after that i swicthed to cable. It made sense to get my internet and tv from one provider. If Fios carried Voom id get fios in a heart beat. I really miss monsters HD. They also had a movie channel that ran classics all day, and a kungfu channel. Pretty awsome niche channels. |

With more channels going either partially or completely HD (CNN HD and FNC HD still show some SD programming, as does Fox Business HD; not sure about CNBC HD+ yet), the demand (and amount of content) for all-HD news services is only going up. (Fox, of all people, is a major driver in this, as they want to go all-HD by the end of 2009, and kill their SD channels at the end of 2010. Of their linear channels, only Fox Reality and some of their RSNs have no HD equivalents.) |

| reply to Grim Reaper Monsters HD wad good before Nov 2007 when they went into rotation of 3 poopy movies a day. I think they have since changed back to more movies, but I haven't seen them since about Jan 2008.
What is this about Verizon vs Cablevision? Is Cablevision really hording their channels and not allowing FIOS TV to carry them? As if there is anybody out there that would give up on all that FIOS HD in favor of a few Rainblow channels by staying with Cablevision. Please! Does Cablevision carry all 26 HBO/MAX channels like FIOS does? That meant a lot more to me and many more viewers than did carriage of AMC, Sundance, IFC, etc.
I love Breaking Bad on AMC, but it isn't a must have. I have FIOS TV and DirecTV and yes, I would like AMC carried by one of them sooner, rather than later, but I would never go Cablevision over FIOS based on that handful of channels exclusive to Cablevision where FIOS competes. Cablevision should grow up and let FIOS carry them. Those channels are not THAT great. If there is anybody out there that would stay with Cablevision over those channels, he or she is alone or almost alone. Not enough to make a financial dent for Cablevision. They'd make more money off FIOS letting them carry them. |

| reply to PGHammer Fox Business HD does not show SD programming. They have been 100% HD since the launch. This of course means studio shows and not all clips. No news channel can control the quality of clips they are showing in a news format. For example, if I take my SD camera and videotape a cop beating up a kid, it will end up on the news. It is still an SD clip on an HD channel. Fox News and Fox Business also use local affiliates for stories. If there is a live breaking story and an SD feed, they have no control. With your mindset that they are not 100$ HD, no news channel will ever be fully HD. As long as all the shows (not on location) are in HD, they are still 100% HD channels. Fox News is not 100% HD yet. Fox Business HD is. Also, keep in mind, these channels use streaming video phones of their crew at times. Sure, it looks horrible, and always probably will. But again, that is not the actual show or studio shot.
As for CNBC. They are called CNBC HD+ for a reason. They admittedly are not really HD, rather, a wide screen channel to give more information, but with SD quality studio shows. |

1 edit | It no longer matters who would like to see VOOM on Fios. Fios will never have VOOM, no one will, unless you live overseas. VOOM is shutting down here in the US at the end of January.

| The real question (regarding the shut down) is, what took so long?
Sounds like real bullheaded upper management. They had an all or none attitude when Dish tried to drop some of the channels, so Dish dropped them all. The logical thing to do would have been to consolidate to 3 or so channels. They could have easily been picked up by cable companies, but they demanded carriage of all the channels. No cable company in their right mind would add all those Voom channels, given the limited space and repeats on each of the Voom channels. Not now that all cable channels are slowly but surely going HD. Most subscribers would rather have the HD version of their regular channels than Voom. Voom should have consolidated. Everybody with a lick of sense was saying that.
Voom gets what they deserve, in all honesty. |

Fox Business is hardly true HD, but rather a knock-off of that CNBC+ wings crap. And I don't want to hear that they do that on purpose to get in all the financial data because that's hardly the case. They just won't broadcast 16x9 true HD, so they go with 4:3 w/ an HD wing. In contrast, all of CNN's primetime and morning show broadcast in beaufiful 16x9 1080i. I just don't watch any "HD" channels that try to pass off 4:3 w/ a HD wing.
Those wings are just screen filler and it seems many channels are following the leader, that being CNBC+. |

So now we are talking about 16x9? I thought we were talking about HDTV.
HDTV broadcasts are not required to be 16x9. They are required to be a minimum of 720p, but the aspect ratio can be 4:3. Fox Business Network HD is 100% HD. CNBC HD+ is not. I never said it was 100% 16x9, and it isn't required to be. If you spent all this time thinking that if it wasn't 16x9, it automatically wasn't HD, you are mistaken. Sure, most channels take advantage of 16x9 for their HD broadcasts, but they are not required to as HD is defined.
In any event, nobody is twisting your arm and forcing you to watch Fox Business HD. If you don't like it, don't watch. I will continue to watch it, in all its HD glory.
Have a good evening. |
