If my math is correct

If my math is correct I can use my 18 Max uverse service at full speed for approximately 45 minutes a day for a month or if I get really wild and crazy I can use it 23 hours straight. So if I have 5 family members (which I do) and we all use the internet everyday we can now only use it at full speed for 9 minutes a day. Sounds like we will start having to ration the tubes we are using around my house.

I will have to cancel my kids Xbox accounts, PS3 accounts, no more club penguin for my little girl and no more on-line soaps for my wife. I will have to tell all of the people that send me a bill via email to just start sending it regular mail. Also reminds me to tell ATT to stop sending me crap email as it is using my bandwidth.

I guess when I call maybe I should just cancel some of their services that I already pay 200 bucks a month for so I can save some extra money in case I do go over and get charged a ridiculous overage charge.

Services that are provided to you BY At&t will likely not count against your cap. But your X-Box, Hulu, Vonage or whatever (NON at&t usage) WILL. I mean really. You pay your phone company $33 or whatever for Unlimited 3mb internet access. Now they want to tell you how much you can use in a month, which directly affects how frequently you can access BBR or other services?

This opens up the opprotunity for them (At&t) to enter into agreements with other service providers directly and for an extra amount. You can pay At&t say $+3/mo (or whatever), and data coming from a pre-negotiated source will likely also not count towards your cap or will have reduced impact on it.

I personally think this is cutting it too close to outright monopolising a technology (Internet Access, in this case).

Yes your math is right. However you are rarely are going to max out your connection. For example if your kids played on Xbox Live 24/7 they'd use maybe 40 GB a month if that. And that's 24/7. Sites like Hulu that stream TV shows even in "HD" format streams at less than 2.5 Mbps. SD is less than half that. So your wife could watch her soaps for about a hour a day in "HD" format before using up her share which would be 30 GB. I am assuming you are dividing bandwidth evenly 5 ways 150/5=30 GB each. Most youtube videos stream at 320 Kbps so you could watch 7 1/2 hours of youtube a day before using your 30 GB. Your kids club penguin playing wouldn't eat up 30 GB a month even if she played 8 hours a day.

I suggest getting a bandwidth monitor for each computer or if your lucky your router ( assuming you are using one ) has one bult in. That way you can tell how much you are using.

I fully suggest speaking with your wallet and canceling every other serice you have with them and tell them why. when at&t see how much revenue they are losing by having millions of customers do that they'll stop with these caps.

That is the best way to do it, vote with your wallet and tell them that metered internet access is not the way to go.

Even though 95% may never reach those caps, the fact is, we don't want to be bothered or monitoring usage in a family household.
