laptop or desktop?

My father, whose desktop computer is directly connected to the router, wants to get a new computer. He is thinking of getting a laptop. When I called FIOS to order it a few months ago, I was asked whether the computer that would be connected to the router was a desktop or a laptop. I was under the impression that it had to be a desktop that was directly connected. Is this true? Also, how would he go about connecting a new computer to this router? The FIOS Tech installed software on my father's desktop. He is not sure if he has this software now. Is this going to be a problem later?

Re: laptop or desktop?

You can connect any kind of computer you like directly to the router as long as it has a network card/chip in it. Most laptops and desktops come with one by default these days.

You will not need to install any extra software to get it to work with FiOS but I would suggest assigning it a static IP address (such as 192.168.1.12).

I've had a laptop with my FIOS internet since day one. It makes no difference whether he gets a desktop or laptop.

Laptops are better since you are then not tied to always being in one spot in your house to go on the Internet (assuming of course that things are setup wirelessly).

If he buys a laptop he can connect to the router wirelessly. The ssid (network name) and the wep password are written on the side of the router. To get his account information on the new computer...connect to the internet and go to:

click: Configure additional PC or reinstall software

just enter his user name and password and follow the prompts.

The laptop is the best bet for him, he can use it wherever he wants, however he wants. Unless he's some sort of big time gamer or CAD guy.

And yes, it will be fine as others have posted.

As other have said, a laptop is certainly more convenient.

If you're concerned about wireless connectivity (I know you have had problems), most laptops these days come with both a built-in wireless card and a wired connection. The MAC Airbook is a notable exception, having only a wireless card. In any case, it's a good ides to make sure any laptop has both.
