Re: laptop or desktop? You can connect any kind of computer you like directly to the router as long as it has a network card/chip in it. Most laptops and desktops come with one by default these days.
You will not need to install any extra software to get it to work with FiOS but I would suggest assigning it a static IP address (such as 192.168.1.12).
