| [Help] Recommendations to improve my abilities
I posted this picture in the gallery and just now realized I did not check the buttons for comments. I just got the Nikon D60 and am trying to get used to it. What could I have done to improve this picture? I did crop a little off the left side and I probably could have got just a little more of Cody (on the right. I used Gimp (which I am now trying to learn) to clean up a little around each of their noses (yuck....gross ).
Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

| Looks ok to me but I like 'em simple.
Advice: Keep practicing and trying different things until you get results you are happy with. Try different settings on the camera and take the same picture over and over with each differnt setting and compare the results. Learn what results you can expect from using different settings. -- Founding member, 2002-2003, 2005-2006 Director of Communications, 2004-2005 Secretary for the Crunchenstein Project |

| Thanks for the reply. I'll be sure to keep practicing. Personally I liked the picture too but then again I'm kinda partial to the subjects . I was just curious if I should have maybe got a little more of their shoulders/upper body or not. -- I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. |

| reply to ImaDuffer264 A lovely shot of 2 really good looking youngsters. I find the shot a little close to the edge of the image on the right side and that hand a bit distracting as it doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Yes, it might have looked a bit better with the shoulders both showing, but what's done is done. Keep at it. I think you did well with the shot itself and learning how to crop and/or edit here and there takes a long time. -- JKK

Looks like a keeper. You will get better, you have done nothing wrong. Just keep shooting! They will grow and give more and more shots to hold in your memories. -- Learning something everyday makes not a Noobie, but a Professional Noobie! Like me... |

| reply to ImaDuffer264 Awesome shot! No complaints here, you did a great job! The hand looks semi funky, but I actually like it. I'm guessing he's sitting sideways in a chair or something and is leaning on the back of it (Which is a natural looking pose and something to try and catch)
Hardest thing to do with kids (I'm terrible at this with my kids too) is pulling the camera away from them just a touch to get a bit more of "what they're doing" in the pic as opposed to the awesome smiles. I'm totally guilty at that and usually kick myself for missing something that would complete the "Story" of the picture because I missed what they were doing with their hands/feet/etc. So yes IMHO the hands are good

| reply to ImaDuffer264 Thank-you jaykaykay , inciter , and kewlkeed for the positive reinforcement and suggestions. Sorry for the late response, wife and I were shopping all day yesterday . We will not see the kids now till Christmas but you can be sure I'll do my best to fill the memory card with pics.
Can anyone suggest a good no nonsense beginners book to learn the basics of D-SLR photography? I thought about the "dummies" series but after reading some of the reviews it looks like the author spends a great deal of time comparing point and shoot cameras to SLR's. I don't need that. I've already got the D-SLR
Any good suggestions or is it better to just take thousands of pictures on different settings and learn on my own?. -- I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. |

There are many excellent sites linked with great information available. There is a popular book often mentioned here, but the name escapes me now. Someone will no doubt post it. Obviously I don't have it.
By the way - I like the photo of the two young un's. If there was a red-eye issue, you and gimp healed it nicely. Those are really brown eyes. I like the aperture chosen by you and/or the camera. On a photo like this, I like the background to be a somewhat out of focus as it can detract from the main subject. |
