I must be a thief now. My daughter was playing a Charlie Brown Christmas on DVD this Thanksgiving and we were sitting through ad after ad, unable to do anything (FF, menu, etc) about it because every DVD command would bring up the "Not Allowed" sign.
The 7 year old walks up to the player, hits "Stop, Stop, Play" and the feature starts -- no mandatory FBI warning, to menu, no fuss --
It's apparently a well-known shortcut that nearly always works.

If that's true, then how would you be a "thief?" You're paying to watch the ads. You wouldn't be shown the ads if you were not paying a subscription to your cable provider. So since you're paying to watch the ads, there's nothing wrong with treating each ad as a 30 second "show" and skipping it. -- Reptiles Are Cuddly And Pretty |

I Googled up some other suggestions at »hexmen.com/blog/2007/04/skip-dvd-intro/
The "right" way to do it is to rip the DVD and eliminate the odious "PGC"s, but I rarely get around to doing that.
Amazingly the "jab Stop repeatedly" technique is the same thing I use to keep old VHS tapes from auto starting upon insertion, so I can more easily rewind them, or prepare for later viewing.
Hmm, it's also one of the best ways to start up a PC (skipping memory checks, getting to the BIOS, getting to Safe Mode menu, getting SCSI prompts, etc.)
