1 edit | [Speed] Atlanta - no speed upgrades, slow upload?
I live in East Atlanta, and I was bored today so I decided to try and get some info out of Comcast about why my upload speeds are so terrible. I have an 8 megabit connection, which I can often max out. Downloads are fine. I seem to get PowerBoost OK, I can occasionally see my downloads maxing at 12 megabits. My upload speeds have been the same for 3 years, 200 kbps, max. I got an email in July saying they were going up to 2000 kbps, but I've not seen a single bit of improvement. It's terrible. Is this the way it is for everyone in the city?
I was doing a live chat with an obviously non native english speaking person, who says my modem to their servers get 2200 kbps -- I call BS, no way, my last speed test showed 1/10th of that.
Just curious if this is the norm for my location or if it's my setup that's the problem, do I need a new modem, etc.
Thanks!
Here's my diagnostic info:
--------------------
1) Atlanta, GA. Within the city limits, not the 'burbs.
2) Slow upload speeds. I consistently get no more than 200 kbps uploads, even though I get 8000 - 12000 kbps downloads with no problem.
3) constant problem, always occurs.
4) Modem: Motorola SB5101. Firmware version SB5101N-2.7.2.0-GA-00-NOSH
5) My network consists of the modem, and my old WRT54G running Tomato firmware 1.22
6) No firewall or virus software installed

| OK, I'm clearly an idiot. I finally realized that I had my outgoing bandwidth limited to 200 kbps via QOS settings on my router. My upload speed seems far more reasonable now:

I'd still like to see 16/2 service in my area soon! |

Now that I realized what was wrong, and I need to reconfigure my QOS entirely anyway, I may just end up turning it off entirely. |

| Well, it's about time. Of course, Atlanta is the last major market to get the Blast speed upgrades, just like all of the previous upgrades. As I posted before, Atlanta will probably be the last major market to upgrade to DOCSIS 2.0/3.0. Meanwhile, ATT U-verse deployment is nearing full force here in Atlanta and Comcast is dragging their heels to keep up with better offerings by U-Verse such as SuperMax 18 and much larger selection of HD channels. |

I've not found one in-town neighborhood with U-Verse, especially not in Buckhead, one of the most densely-populated areas of the city. When I've called to inquire I'm simply told "We don't have any plans for that area yet". Believe me, if I could get it I would leave Comcast so fast.... -- *************** I think computer viruses should count as life. My download speeds are usually quite good, I can get 10 kbps at times with SpeedBoost. I think I just got a bad moment with that speed test. It happens. I just got a better result:

As for Atlanta getting Blast by 12/15 -- that would be great! Living in the city limits, it seems we always get this stuff last. It's like this with DSL too. I couldn't get DSL at all until late 2001, and I could never get better than 1000 kbps, while everyone else's speed went to 3 megabit, 6 megabit... That's why I finally gave up on my DSL. |
