Re: Configuring DNS on 6100F?

To bridge the 6100, (or any Westell with the red and black firmware) :
access the GUI (192.168.1.1)
admin/password or admin/admin usually
if you get a user settings screen - it's the unit wanting it's password changed
select Network icon fr top menu
select network connections fr left menu
click "Broadband Connection (DSL)"
change Protocol to "bridge" only
change Bridge Mode to "bridge" only
save - the unit will reset
re-access the GUI > Network > network connections
click on "LAN"
remove the top checkmark (to disable the DHCP server
save and exit

Now the unit is just a dumb modem - it cannot make a connection and cannot hold an IP address, so the Internet light should stay off.

If the MAC of the Westell is "bound" to your public IP - you could at this point wait the 2-4 hours til the IP unbinds - or call the tech support and have them "release your IP" before you turn on the router, takes a couple minutes - or clone the MAC of the Westell into your router. This is the fastest and easiest method, most routers have this feature and the MAC should be printed on the Westell.

In bridge mode you shouldn't have to access the modem config - unless you want to check the line stats. It can be done by temporarily configuring a pc to use a static IP, (like 192.168.1.48 ; subnet 255.255.255.0 ; gateway 192.168.1.1), and connecting it directly to the bridged 6100.

Ah, okay thanks. That's what I wanted, a dumb modem. I tried bridge once before but since it didn't work I figured I needed a router between everything. Didn't find out till later that verizon has 2 hour wait on new MAC ids.

So in bridge mode I won't be able to get into the modem config?

Since the switch is future, I gather it has not yet been purchased. I would consider bridging that Westell, (turns it into a "dumb modem" so all it does is sync up and bridge the signal from the phone line to the Ethernet port), and replacing the switch in your diagram with a quality gaming router.

I'm no networking guy, but I can generally figure out what I want to do on SOHO routers, this modem I can't.
The picture shows what I'd basically like to have setup. Public IPs to all clients, if I can, leave it all on auto, and have the DNS in the modem so I can plug something in and it's ready.
Right now, I just have my PC hooked directly to the modem, but it's NATed.

I followed it to the letter, and restarted. Won't work that way. Opendns says I'm not using their servers.
They only way it changed the DNS servers is the way I did it in the OP.

Why would I put in level3 when I want to use opendns?
Ok, in that case..

Type in opendns#1 for the name and type in 208.67.222.222.

Then after you press save or apply, add DNS Entry.

This time type in opendns#2 for the name and type in 208.67.200.200.

and press apply.

Ok.

Use the data from »Verizon Online DSL FAQ »What are the DNS servers?

For example of one of them..

Host Name: vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net

IP Address: 4.2.2.1
