[ex-GTE] Setting up new Linksys modem router combo -help

I am thinking of replacing my old Westell model -B-90 and Linksys BEFs41 router using DHCP (both 5 1/2 yeas old) with a single Linksys modem router combo-wired. I figure given the age of the units one or both are due to fail at any moment?

I plan on doing an ipconfig /release and powering everything down and plugging in the new combo. Rebooting etc.

Do I need to do anything else to make the new combo work, and do I have to call Verizon to have them reset anything before the new unit will work? I don't think so , but world appreciate info from the pros on this.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You're right int hat you need to release the IP address before changing your equipment - but it's the public IP that needs to be released. The public IP will be held by either the B90 Westell or your Linksys at the moment, likely the Linksys.

Access the Linksys - usually 192.168.1.1, (or whatever the default gateway is when you do ipconfig) - check the status page - if the WAN (or Internet) IP address starts with 192, then your Westell has the Public IP, but if it starts with anything else press the release, or disconnect button. When the WAN IP changes to 0.0.0.0 you can change out the equipment.

ipconfig only affects the IP address that your PC holds, no need to release it.

Then with new equipment do I have to renew publicIP address?

No, shouldn't have to. When the new equipment is connected it should automatically ask the ISP's server for an IP address. Since you released the IP/MAC binding, the server will have no record of what MAC it should issue the IP to, so it will capture the MAC of the new equipment and issue an IP for it.
