Looks like Netflix is struggling in economy & technically

»news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-101184···1_3-0-20
Web video-rental store Netflix has laid off 50 technical specialists, the people who typically do most of the trouble-shooting for customers with tech issues, such as struggling to connect the service to their laptop or set-top boxes.

This may be strange timing to those customers of Netflix's streaming service who have experienced a drop-off in streaming quality during the past month. In the past several weeks, some Netflix customers have complained about poor video quality and long buffering delays.

Last week, Netflix said engineers corrected the problem. While some customers continue to see shoddy streams, Netflix does appear to have licked the malfunction for most customers.
Looks like both the economy and scaling the operation for more customers is taking a toll on Netflix customer quality.

Sort of makes sense, they probably over-hired in anticipation of the Xbox launch and needed to cut back. While at the same time, when launching the new services, you see a spike in complaints as the kinks get worked out. 50 employees, that's like the seasonal staff at a Macy's.

I've had good a good experience so far with the Roku on a 3.0 DSL line. I don't watch much until after 9PM, and I get full or near full stream quality on everything I choose. Whether that lasts ... who knows. I do know you'll need an 8 to 10 connection for streaming HD, and the selection will be far worse than what's available now. If you like TV shows, indie films and Starz, netflix streaming can't be beat for the $$ if you're a member, and even if you're not, at $8.99 for the whatever unlimited plan. Something tells me this will all change soon enough

You didn't read the full article. Netflix is cutting the 50 helpdesk tech jobs do to the dropoff in service calls from customers as the product improves. They are still adding technical positions in other departments, they just don't need as many phone support techs.
