C0deZer0 : To try and keep this as short and sweet as possible:

This constant revision fetish that Sony has with their PS3 models in particular should be considered offensive, personally. Perfect example is the release of GTA4. When that first came out, there were numerous problems getting it to work on ps3's. But then it turned out it was having problems with those ps3's that did have hardware BC, because R* only bothered to test on the soft-BC 80GB and no-BC 40GB units for compatibility. So already from a dev's standpoint, it's a problem because as minor as Sony tries to downplay the differences, there is still enough of a difference to cause problems. Yes, it got patched later, but I can at least attest that locally, there were far more returned ps3 copies of GTA4 sooner and faster than there were for the 360.

No matter how much you want to slice/explain/apologize/patronize, the simple fact is that there wasn't a reason worthy enough to cut BC in the ps3, especially considering how much of a selling point it was (and to some like me, is) for the console to have accurate BC for those older games that we own on disc. The sad thing is that at least around me (unscientific, I know...), many people look at the name "PlayStation" in the PS3 and automatically think that the ps3 will play ps2 games, and never bother to read the disclaimer on the box. It also doesn't help said disclaimer about how it won't play PS2 games isn't in a reader-friendly font size. :o Because of the ps2, many simply expect that the ps3's out there for sale now are BC models. And you can only imagine the expressions of shock, surprise, and/or disgust by many when they have to be explained that these newer units are thusly stripped.

They are reliable, quiet and work well. In most every regard they are wonderful consoles to own. The designers who came up with the PS3 were brilliant and have really made about the best gaming system ever.

At the same time, I'm developing a dislike for Sony marketing. Stripping BC from the PS3 which was already not doing all that well, probably didn't help it much. Add to this confusion with 80 GB versions, some of which are BC some of which are not. Consider the vanishing number of USB ports, the lost SACD support. Then review the current pair of of production systems which seem to be 40 GB PS3's with larger hard drives (80 and 160 GB respectively).

Sony has managed to diminish what a PS3 is over time, while not doing much about the price for over a year. At the rate Sony marketing is moving, I expect in the near future to read of a PS3 with limited PS3 game support.

The 20, 60, 40, 80, 80, 160 GB PS3 naming mess should have been avoided.

20, 60, ARE HIGHER models anyway

the 160GB is not worth the extra 100$

you might as well get a 80GB and BUY a Seagate 500GB Drive off newegg for 109$

[ps3] Sony

pandora : I love my PS3's, they are great game consoles.

Today I read a current discussion on another board. Some people thought all PS3's were BC, some thought none were, some didn't know what some models were. Sony has created a situation where what exactly a PS3 is, and what it can do, require either research or for someone to have followed the PS3 history.

When I look at Xbox 360, I see an inferior hardware design, with great software, and even better marketing. Most of all it seems to have done a great job at providing games to players.

Microsoft, which many consider evil with respect to it's Windows franchise, is loved by many gamers. That is how great Xbox marketing has been, the evil corporate giant Microsoft is loved.

Microsoft saw that the Wii was taking advantage of low production costs, by not including a hard drive. Allowing it to sell for a lower cost. The response? Was the Xbox 360 Arcade for $199.

Xbox now comes in $199, $299, and $399 flavors. They are all Xbox, but you can decide to pay more or less than a Wii. You can decide to pay less than a Wii get a game and be happy.

Sony has decided to do something else. It has not only confused it's brand, but has also kept to a 2007 pricing structure which didn't work from the start.

Worse tonight I read, that Sony plans to cut the price of Playstation 3's in March ... AFTER the Christmas season. It is almost like they wanted to slit their own throats. Why on earth would anyone buy a PS3 for the holiday if the price will be cut a few months later?

I love my PS3's, but I wish Sony would get some marketing guys in who know how to run a campaign. It would have helped for PS3 Home to be either out or in open beta before Christmas. However that would take brilliant marketing.

Sigh ... pardon my rant ... but I think I'm witnessing the slow titanic sinking of the Playstation line due to bad marketing ... it is upsetting. I'm starting to think there won't ever be a PS4. :(

Link to the article about lower PS3 prices in march is here - »www.gamespot.com/news/blogs/rumo···rch.html
--
"People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use."
