7 Day Forecast:Update; Low Snow Levels Heavy Rain

Thursday And Friday More Cooling Off With Night Time Temps Falling Below Freezing In My Upper Valley Areas, And Below Freezing, Perhaps Near Zero In Many Mt Areas. Northern Deserts Winds Will Still Be Gusty With A Red Flag Warning Still In Place In Santa Barbara, Ventura And Western La County.

Saturday Moring Should Begin Clear And Crisp All Areas. Increasing Clouds All Areas By Saturday Night With Showers Increasing Sunday. Snow Levels Quite High As The Cold Air Moisture Gets Into The Ground. By Sunday Night Snow Levels Will Be Down To 7,000 Feet Or Lower.

Monday: 70% Chance Of Rain All Areas With Snow Level Down To 5,000 Feet In The Southern Mt'S. Snow Levels Will Begin Dropping Again With Snow Down To All Pass Levels And The Upper Deserts By Tuesday. Rainfall At This Time Is To Hard To Determine As To How Much Will Fall, But This Is Looking To Be A Major Storm And As The Storm Gets Closer We Will Be Able To Get A Better Idea As To Exact Tracking And Estimates.

Tuesday: A Continuing Chance Of Rain Or Showers, Snow Levels Remain Low, Perhaps Dropping To 3500 Feet. If Enough Cold Air Sinks Down Over The South Land Snow Levels Will Drop To The Upper Valleys And Foothills. Only 1 Or 2 Inches Is Anticipated At This Time At The Low Levels. Estimates For The Upper Levels Are 6" To 24" In The San Gabriel'S, 12 To 30 Inches In The Big Bear Area And 40 To 60 Inches In The Southern Sierras, 35 To 70 Inches In The Northern Sierras With 5 To 7 Inches Possible At The 500 Foot Level In The Coastal Mt'S, Redding And San Francisco Ranges.

This Storm, Will Be Coming Into Northern California And Then Central California On Friday. Snow Levels Are Expected To Impact All Major Roads In Northern California. Snow Levels On Monday Will Be 500 Feet. Heavy Rain, Fog And Highs Winds Will Occur In All Areas.

I and my friends are watching this setup develop. The Jet stream will begin to bend south Friday Night over Northern California and the Arctic air will begin moving south over the Great basin Saturday Morning.

There are several storm Impulses embedded in the jet stream that should sweep down out of the Gulf Of Alaska where a huge 1025MB Low has set it self up for the next couple of weeks.

As this series of events occurs we are looking for light showers Saturday evening, scattered to wide spread showers on Sunday. Monday increasing intensities with Tuesday as the day with the heaviest amounts of rain and snow, clearing out on Wednesday with a possibility of a cut off low after that for the weekend.

As this system develops and gets closer then we will more accurately have a chance to predict rain and snow amounts

Re: 7 Day Forecast:Update; Low Snow Levels Heavy Rain

A Strong Cold Front Will Cross Central California On Saturday. As A Result...Winds Will Increase Across The Area. With Sustained Winds Of 25 To 40 Mph With Gusts As High As 60 Mph Over The Kern County Mountains And Deserts. In Addition Sustained Winds Of 15 To 25 Mph With Gusts Up To 45 Mph Will Be Possible Across The West Side Of The San Joaquin Valley Including Along The I-5 Corridor. The Winds Will Subside On Saturday Night As A Cold And Unsettled Air mass Pushes Into The Area.

As the Storm Moves into Southern California, Significant Precipitation Will Be Possible From Sunday Through The Middle Of Next Week With Temperatures Running Well Below Normal...Especially Across The Higher Elevations.

As A Result...The Snow Level Will Lower To 1500 To 2500 Feet Which Will Impact Travel Across I-5 Over The Grapevine As Well As Along The Coastal Passes On Sunday.

There are Several Storms Lined up To come Into The South Land, Each One as Cold as The Previous. It is not beyond the Realm Of Possibility that the Snow Level Could Fall To 1,000 feet Especially along The 14 and 5, along the 210 Towards the 15 and Into the Lower Areas Of Glen Helen, the Junction of the 215 and The 15.

Snow fall in the Santa Mt's could be as Low as 3,000 Feet lowering to 2,000 Feet in Heavy Rain bands.

This a Changing Storm, so we Don't Expect Lots of Snow Nor for It To Stick for Very Long at The low Levels. But up to 30 Inches Of snow Could Fall in The resort Areas by Next Thursday.

The First Accumulating Snow Could Occur Along The Northern Slopes Of The Mountains As The Systems Cold Air Arrives Over The Area On Saturday...Lowering Snow Levels To Near 3500 Feet By Late Saturday Night. The Strong Flow And Winter Precipitation Could Result In Treacherous Driving Conditions. Ventura County Mountains- Los Angeles County Mountains Excluding The Santa Monica Range- 442 Am Pst Fri Dec 12 2008 ...Winter Storm Watch In Effect From Saturday Afternoon Through Late Saturday Night... The National Weather Service In Los Angeles/Oxnard Has Issued A Winter Storm Watch For The Los Angeles And Ventura County Mountains. Northwest To North Winds 30 To 45 Mph With Potentially Damaging Gusts To Near 60 Mph Could Develop Over The Area On Saturday Afternoon And Saturday Night And Combine With Periods Of Rain And Snow.

Treacherous Winter Driving Conditions Could Result Especially Through The I-5 Corridor And Lockwood Valley Road With Near White Out Conditions Occurring Across Portions Of The Area. People Planning To Travel Into Or Through The Southern California Mountains During The Watch Period Should Be Prepared For Wintry Weather Conditions.

This Entire system Will Be shifting from the North to the South East. Additional Storms should Impact The Area Over the Next Few Days Almost to Next Weekend.

This is not the main storm....The dry atmosphere is being replaced by very wet and cold moisture coming in from the north as predicted. Any cloud formation with enough moisture with it will drop Virgo and light showers, perhaps even some thunderstorms over the mountains.

This is just the beginning. Gary

I was referring to the dry air over the south land that is being replaced by moist onshore air. It is not quite saturated enough for all of the moisture that was in those clouds to produce even more than showers.

Showers that fall that do not reach the ground are called virga. Oh heck I misspelled it.

I dont know of another word for it other than the moisture falling evaporates before it hits the ground. The process for this is called virga.

6:PM update;
It looks like a series of storms will be moving over the south Land over the next 5 to 7 days. If they move as they are currently moving we will have a few hours of rain and then a few hours of showers.

If the storms slow down then the rainfall will increase. Right now we are looking at 1 to 2 inches along the coast and LA Basin, 3 to 4 inches of rain against the up slope west facing foothills and MT's.

Sunday night snow level will start out at 7,000 feet lowering to 5,000 feet my Monday afternoon. By Tuesday Morning snow levels could be down to 3500 feet affecting all pass's.

Wednesday Morning could see snow levels dip even further as more cold air filters in from the north, perhaps as low as 2500 feet in the Antalope valley and Palmdale landcaster areas. During briedf periods of heavy rain in thunderstorms the snow levels could drop to valley floor levels or 1500 feet.

Again, this all depends on the speed and timing of the arrival of the storm impulses and the cold air. Daytime highs will average 25 degrees below normal all areas.

Snow amounts of 12 to 30 inches are possible at all resort levels with 6 inches possible at 3,000 feet. Mammoth could see as much 6 feet of new snow and the northern Sierras and the Cascades could see snow fall measured in feet.
