| reply to MacAlert I'm seeing similar results to what MacAlert is for connections through NYC, but westbound results are fine (7-9Mb/s).
Line quality testing indicates high packet loss on their backbone router: ae-2-0.cr0.nyc30.tbone.rr.com ... and has for some time (3 months or more?)
I've alerted their tech, who promised to send the information on to the engineers in NJ. Can anyone else on rr.com near NYC confirm similar problems with speed tests or with this particular router? |

Unless that loss happens at that router, and then every router after it, and the final destination, then there is no actual loss. The only loss that is occurring is the rate-limiting of UDP/ICMP packets DIRECTLY to that router.
Not saying that you don't have speed problems, since you say you do. But that one router is not your problem.
I'm not sure how many times it has to be said in these forums that when "loss" and high latency shows up at one hop in the middle of a traceroute, but doesn't continue til the end, that it is not the problem. |

| Skuv,
Thanks for the clarification. What else can I do to diagnose intermittent problems such as I'm seeing? Line quality tests always show about the same -- crystal clear from the West Coast pings and a few issues on the East Coast such as I mentioned before.
Lost Skype calls, dropped connections, etc. but nothing RR will acknowledge to be a real issue. |
