New To MagicJack.....

Running XP on my computer, and since I have connected MJ, an icon is now present in my bottom right tray. It says, "Safely Remove Hardware" I click on it, and it shows MJ as the hardware it seems to want to disconnect.

Questions: How can I make that icon disappear.
Also, when I call the new MJ number, from another phone, the MJ phone doesn't ring. If I were not near my computer, I would not know a call was incoming.

It's a Windows feature for safely removing USB devices. I recommend that you use it before removing the MJ device. The device has a writeable flash drive. The softphone opens it for writing every 3 seconds. (I don't know why.). A fair amount of people have suffered a "broken storage" error. I wonder if it's because most people just remove the drive without using the Windows tool to safely do it.

Regarding the phone ringing, if it's a real handset connected to the MJ device, you might go into the softphone "menu" and make sure the handset is selected. Try a different phone. Maybe a powered USB hub (to make sure the USB device is getting enough power to ring the phone).

If you run procmon (google for it) you can see that the softphone has a *ton* of activity even when you'd think it's idle. It re-reads the same registry entries every 3 seconds.

It must not cause much resource consumption because my magicjack.exe process is at 0. It jumps up to 2-3% every 3-4 seconds at the same moment the softphone opens something for write (read, close) on the dongle.

I used the instructions to run MJ without the USB device. (I only use the softphone with a headset.). Since I bought 4 extra years at the time of service, and I've heard stories of people who couldn't transfer their time to a new MJ (when the original unit died), I thought I should use this procedure to minimize the wear and tear on the device. I didn't even think of the USB flash memory being exhausted by MJ's constant open/close (for write).

The instructions are here:

You have to read through the first few posts because there's an "Oh, I forgot, you have to do this" add-on to the first set of instructions.

Sorry. I forgot they do that. I don't know why they do. It must have something to do with the way they discuss how to do things that violate the Terms of Service (like finding your SIP credentials for the softphone, and using them with an ATA device). But, I don't know what purpose the restriction serves. Anyone can get an ID. It's not like it will keep Dan from learning what they're doing (and holes in his system that allow it).

FWIW: I don't think the instructions to run the softphone without the USB device violate the ToS. You still get the advertisements. It doesn't defeat the spirit of ToS.

For a MJ user it's a useful site. It would be worth getting an ID.

dvd536, Amigo,

Well it may have to do with trying to force membership numbers up and participants verses browsers.

In fact I am sure of it. Last month the owner announced that because his member ship had climbed and he is making a little money off the advertisements that he was going to give a little back to the members via a free MagicJack a month based on member activity and contribution to the group.

He actually lied about that because last month he gave away FIVE MagicJack units.

dvd536, I don't remember any personal questions or things I wouldn't tell most any stranger on the street, well maybe a few things. Just the normal stuff Name and email address, that was about it to the best of my recollection.

I can see requiring registration to post, but to require it to view a page very lame.
i'm pretty sure the ads pay on impressions, not how many people had to jump through the sites hoops to view.

It's just for that one forum area. I agree it's dumb because I don't understand what practical purpose it serves.

I should have remembered that odd requirement before posting the link.

dvd536, Amigo,

I won't attempt to justify it anymore than I have. It is definitely not my cup of tea either.

All I was really attempting to say is that I don't think there is anything sinister involved. I just think it is the owners way of attempting to build his membership base.

Actually I don't think it is that unusual and I believe I have run into that on other Technical insider forums. But of course I can't remember which ones at the moment. Pretty convenient ain't it. Difficult to debate an argument when no proof it offered.

Anyway - aside from that one peculiarity it is a very helpful site when you are dinking with MJ and Thin Clients.
