The real simple answer is NO!

It really amazes me at the stupidity of people posting up these speed tests.

BTW this was posted during a 283.9 KB/s header download from BH's newshosting server... a little slow to say tonight. Will try GigaNews later.

Try Usenet binary groups... that'll tell you your true speed. I just read thru the posts here. This is the first time I've heard of PowerBoost. I've always paid the standard $44.95 for the regular RR. So I checked my account online. This is weird. On my Account Summary Page, the Monthly Charges are now listed at $47.95. But when I click on my Statement Details, it still shows $44.95. There's no mention of $47.95 anywhere on the bill. If they notified me about a $3 increase, I never saw it.

Also:

"You are not limited to a certain number of “PowerBoosts,” rather they are granted as often as the network availability allows."

So it sounds like they are saying "Hey, we have all this bandwidth, why let it go to waste? If idbit is the only guy on the network, we might as well keep it cranked up for him." Is that what they're doing? Would that explain my gaudy speed test numbers? I probably am the only RR customer in my neighborhood. Only thing, I'm not paying for Turbo. And they do say that PowerBoost is only available for Turbo customers. It looks like they added it without telling me.

I'm wondering if I can believe these speed tests, because I tried downloading some video files from a sports website (nfl.com). The download speeds were terrible - around 500 kb/s. Is that normal? Is the website that you're downloading from usually a huge bottleneck like that? Can somebody recommend a better website for file download testing?

Turns out my Wirelss G network was limiting my speed tests to around 13Mbps. I just updated to a WRT310N running mixed N and G and now get the full 25Mbps (or very close)

Funny how we used to complain the ISP was slow - now the wireless is slower than the ISP!!

Yes. All you are seeing are speedtests being done by folks with Turbo. They really don't prove anything except that their speedboost is working as advertised. Upload around here is 768 for turbo. I'm in the mid-ohio division also. The one thing i could use is higher upstream speed though. It still whips dsl in my area though.

Make sure to ask them what their promotions are.

Thanks for the clarification. What else can I do to diagnose intermittent problems such as I'm seeing? Line quality tests always show about the same -- crystal clear from the West Coast pings and a few issues on the East Coast such as I mentioned before.

Unless that loss happens at that router, and then every router after it, and the final destination, then there is no actual loss. The only loss that is occurring is the rate-limiting of UDP/ICMP packets DIRECTLY to that router.

Not saying that you don't have speed problems, since you say you do. But that one router is not your problem.
