[LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

Lately, my HSI has been very sluggish in the evenings. I just pinged the gateway (8:15 PM, 12/11/08), and I've copied the results below. It's not as bad during the day, and it improves late at night. I'm in Baton Rouge, zip code 70810.

Levels were outstanding at the time (S/N=37, Down=-3, Up=39) and don't vary much. I check at least every couple of days.

I've asked your local market to look into the connection issues you are experiencing.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

Have you heard anything from the local market. It still isn't any better. No errors on modem at all. Get over 20mb in morning and early afternoon. I'm lucky to pull down 300k at night though. I have replaced the modem with a different one as well as connect it to the main cable input to the house and it does the same thing.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

I came looking for a solution to this same issue and guess what I am in 70810 too. While the behavior used to happen at night, today the whole day, i was hitting at or below the 2 MBps mark. I am on the premier plan which is at 9 MBps. I tried downloading a file and at the time the browsing got so sluggish, I was getting timeouts.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

I talked to Cox online support and they didnt see anything wrong at the modem's end. Anyway, the next day, I checked my speed and it was back to normal. Could have been a glitch in the lines.

Anyone know whats the bandwidth limits of the premier connection. Is it market specific. My preferred connection is supposed to be 10000/800, according to the tech I chatted with.

I am experiencing the exact same problem as you for the past 6 months and I am in 70810 as well. In the evenings I can only get less than 1 MB, but I am paying for 15 MB. Is the node in this area just extremely overloaded?

If looks like the modem is logging lots of sync timing failures. It might be time to have a technician come out and take a look.

@cox.net

WOW! I thought I was going crazy with these latency issues in 70810. I am having the EXACT same problem as you all are describing. I play WOW and typically my pings are in the 80ms level. Well, these past few months, things have been escalating to horrible pings. I have been putting up with it for a while cause I thought it was my 8 year old surfboard 4200 modem and router. I bought a new SB 5101 and dlink router. The problem was still there. It is like clock work, around 8:30pm latency spikes up to 1600ms and I get disconnected from WOW. Then for the rest of the night I will hover with approx 500ms ping. At around 10:30 ish the system will go back to a reasonable 150 ping.

I dont have any copies of tracerts or pings but if the cox person in here would like that info I can get it next time the issue happens and I dont mind PMing the mac address as well.

if any Cox guys can read my plea, heres my deal. 7pm to 12 pm is all i need my internet for. online gaming(xbox live, left4 dead, cod4) and netflix streaming of nbc shows. Can you please guarantee the bare minimum bandwidth that i can play these games without losing connection, and watch the nbc shows in HD. Every time I start a show at these times, i get 4 bars and show starts in hd but 2 minutes later it stops, and quality is reduced because of connection issues. So far I havent been able to watch a single show in HD this month.

I've been having similar problems, but I think it's not a "defect" as far as Netflix goes. What I think happens is that Netflix rates your connection on the Speedboost, thinks your connection can handle HD, then when it un-Speedboosts, the buffer runs out. I've found that if after you start it, pause it for a minute or two, then it's usually enough.

Completely unscientific and anecdotal, I know, but it works.

I keep getting frequent internet disconnects and server timeouts and my t.v. is blocking on HD channels and the audio drops out. The cable tv problems happen whenever the internet is acting up. I didn't have a prob. when I lived in 70816, but since I've moved to 70810 two weeks ago I've been having nonstop problems.

Good luck with that. In the first few years I had HSI, first with @Home, then TCI, then Cox (just ownership changing hands), techs came out several times when I was having problems like this. They never were able to solve the problem, which would mysteriously become fixed weeks to months later. Then over time, it would degrade again. Since Cox took over, this cycle has become less frequent, but it does appear to be happening again now.

Thanks. When it gets like this, it's impossible even to watch a low-res Youtube movie, and when it lasts several hours a night during "prime-time", it's a real problem.

dhar,

Your ping statistics are for 68.11.159.129 . What is that? Is that the default gateway of your modem? If that's the case you're getting packet loss between the Ethernet port of your computer and your modem... no further. Your problem lies there.

It is indeed the IP address of the default gateway according to my router. Do you really believe it's just a coincidence that other people in this thread observe slowness at the same times that this simple test agrees with the slowness I observe, or that Cox techs have acknowledged node congestion at those times? As you have stated it's a local effect, isolated to my computer, all I can say is, I had no idea my computer had such spooky influence on the rest of the world.

It should be noted that with the merger of the two Louisiana markets that no consolidation of equipment will occur. Only administrative changes will be occurring.

Well, back here again to post that the internet is unuseable. And lookie what we have, dhar is posting as well. I thought this problem was behind us as the download speeds and pings have been killer. I can not even watch a standard def video on you tube. I am to the point of wanting other services now. I am paying for the high end tier of service yet when I am home from work (5:30pm+) I may as well just have the el cheapo connection because thats the speeds I get. lol dhar, i just ignore the bs. The advice of some is just like calling level one support. "OK reboot your PC" "reboot your modem" "Did that fix it?"

to be clear.

I was using an old surboard 4200 and a linksys router.
I thought my setup was getting old and flaky.
Earlier in the year, I bought a 5101 and new dlink.
Same issues.
Then around Feb or so things cleared up. I thought GREAT!? they fixed it!
Now, back to the same BS again.

also, to be clear. between 5pm and 10pm ish, this is when the problem starts. again, to be clear, THIS PROBLEM EXISTS WITH A ROUTER, NO ROUTER, OR EVEN THE CHEASY USB CONNECTION.

PLZ, no more pc to modem talk unless someone can come up with a logical explination as to why my PC would have an internal clock to say that it was going to slow down my speeds and create packet loss during that time frame.

COX tech, thx for the help. Plz try and run your tests on a monday afternoon or night.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

Winman, sounds like your problem might be your node in your area is getting overloaded in the evenings. If you are complaining about speed slowdowns between them times during the week. Then most likely your Node in your area is being overloaded and cant handle everyone pulling from it, so its causing your slowdowns and etc.

I was having this same issue, they put me on another Node and now my speeds are fine again.

xxwinmanxx,

I got you confused with dhar. Your problem is NOT between the computer and the modem. You can plainly see that when you ping the modem's gateway and receive 0% packet loss. Maybe you should open another thread to describe your problem

Figured I would show the difference for saturday morning while everyone is outside or still sleeping.

Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

winman,

You have a different issue all together. The download speed stays high versus the upload speed going in the dirt. The exact opposite from everyone else lately. Normally when the upload is bad this indicates an issue with the modem communicating back with the server.

Since you have already checked the modem and router it would be safe to say a technician is needed to diagnose further. Make sure you specify the exact times the upload speed is dropping as there could be a noise issue in your node, this is different than just too many modems.

I am in 70810 and seeing the slowdowns everyday in the evening between 6 and 10 pm (less than 2mbps down). I have tried with router/without router/usb connections, no change. I have tried recommended boot sequence, no change. Early morning (4 am) and weekend mornings (until 11 pm) speeds are great.
I asked cox customer service to come and check for the problem, they came last week and found nothing wrong, the speed saga is still the same. I am also on premier plan (9 mbps down).
It is exactly what others think it is, overcrowded node in the evening, but thats when you need the connection, not late at night or early in the morning.
Hope cox will do something to solve this, or I am going to join the list of highly dissatisfied customers.

While I agree dhar may be pinging the ip address of the modem the problem is still an issue late in the afternoon. Regardless if he is pinging incorrectly or pinging correctly, he still has the problem in the late afternoons just like many others are posting.

Just thought I would post another shot.

I dont feel like we should make multiple posts about speed issues in 70810. If dhar was posting that he always had a slow connection, I would agree that there needs to be a seperate thread.

Not to beat a dead horse but these are some of the best upload speeds I have ever seen. Perhaps one day the download speed will get better.
