Re: [LA] Slow in Baton Rouge 70810

While I agree dhar may be pinging the ip address of the modem the problem is still an issue late in the afternoon. Regardless if he is pinging incorrectly or pinging correctly, he still has the problem in the late afternoons just like many others are posting.

Just thought I would post another shot.

I dont feel like we should make multiple posts about speed issues in 70810. If dhar was posting that he always had a slow connection, I would agree that there needs to be a seperate thread.

Well with repeat showing of speeds like this during peak/prime hours. it just seems to me a overloaded node or etc in yalls area. But still if you guy's havent had a tech come out yet, do so before questioning, what im saying above.

What is your basis for saying that?

Only that the 8+ years of having cox my default gateway has always been my IP address with a .1 at the end rather than the final IP.

I also have ~5 years prior to cox with bellsouth DSL which always had a .1 at the end.

I however do not claim to know how the cox service operates in terms of IP assignments which is why I mentioned that you may be pinging the modem and not the default gateway.

My only reason for mentioning that was to get off of the ethernet card to cable modem talk and put more focus on the time of day factor.

Not to beat a dead horse but these are some of the best upload speeds I have ever seen. Perhaps one day the download speed will get better.

dhar,

I just looked this up for you since you need it in writing from someone other than me. Here's a website:

»support.gateway.com/s/Checklists···68.shtml

Go to Wired & Wireless Steps

Look at the chart for #3. Look all the way to the right...

Pinging the Default Gateway does not test external connections or other segments of the network.

I don't know why you're inconsistently on again/off again. But I do know if you ping your gateway and get packet loss the problem is between your computer and your modem. Good luck.

J_rokk im not sure you are understanding the OP correctly. He is not losing packets between his computer and his home router gateway. He is getting good packets from his computer then to his router then to the modem. Now once the packets leave his modem he is losing packet at cox's gateway on the UBR end. He doesnt see packet lose untill it hits cox's network.

Ah, a Gateway Computers support page. You know, I didn't ask you to go google some wrong or inapplicable information that would seem to support your position, which is clearly what you did. Somebody claiming to be this long-term CABLE technician ought to be able to produce better documentation than some random generic web page titled "Windows XP - Internet/Network Connectivity" from a PC assembler whose best days are 10 years behind it. You should have wanted to refute the web page I cited, which SPECIFICALLY talked about CABLE systems, with other SPECIFIC information relevant to CABLE systems.

Now, for the proof that you are wrong.

From home, I can ping/tracert my default gateway using sites such as centralops.net, tracert.org, and dnsstuff.com. So yesterday, before leaving home, I disconnected all cables from my cable modem, including the power and coax. On the way home, I stopped at the local library, the most neutral location I can think of, and I visited each of these sites. I used their online tools just like I did earlier at home and pinged and/or tracert'd 68.11.159.129, the same address I've been using all these months in this thread, which has been and is currently my default gateway. As expected, the pings/tracerts were all successful. My modem was not connected to anything and was unpowered at the time of these successful tests. Therefore, THE DEFAULT GATEWAY CANNOT BE MY MODEM!

Let me say that again:

THE DEFAULT GATEWAY IS NOT MY MODEM. IT ABSOLUTELY IS EXTERNAL TO MY LOCATION.

And mine ends with .129. I don't see the relevance of this type of observation.

But to accomplish that, you needed to tentatively reinforce the other guy's nonsense? Please see my reply to j_r0kk in which I prove that the address I've been pinging all along, the default gateway, is in fact not my modem or any component in my house, but must be some equipment belonging to the Cox infrastructure. See also the page I previously cited in a reply to j_r0kk which explains what a default gateway is in a cable system.

I am aware what a default gateway is.

Personally I think all of this shit throwing back and forth is doing nothing to solve these issues in 70810. Lets try to get back on track here.

Irregardless of who is pinging what, there is a time of day issue with our speeds. Pinging is merely represinting graphically the condition at the time of the issue. I know of no problems related to computer hardware that are time of day related.

Lets try to get back to civil responses and sharing of information. I am sure Cox Tech will not touch this thread with a 50ft pole atm.

To kick that concept off, here is a speed test. Looks good right now.

Not in 70810.. but Baker/Zachary area. Speed has been horrible the past few days.

Fired up the HDHomeRun QAM tuner w/TSReader on the downstream channel I'm locked on and sure enough 96%-100% utilization. Saturated to the max... it usually only did this during Friday nights and weekends.

Glad I'm not paying for the highest tier otherwise I'd be pissed. They need to either split the node here or add another downstream channel and off load half of us.

Listen, I've been trying to keep this thread that I started on track. I'm not going to allow some random person to tell me the issue lies within my house when there is no evidence that it does and plenty of evidence that it does not. When that person dismisses everything he's been told and flings around incorrect information, I'm going to call him out. I don't make any apologies for anything I've said.

I posted the same thing several messages ago, and I even gave my specific hardware in some detail.

Something may have changed behind the scenes this week, and I can say with certainty that Cox has been paying attention. I'm going to give it a few more days before commenting further.

Thought I would show a 10:30pm sunday night test.

These type of speeds remind me when all the new craze was a 56k modems. Then you would dial in and only connect at 4200bps or 3800bps cause of crappy connections at the phone company.

To conclude the 6:30 pm post I made today, here is a 9:20pm post.

Quite frankly, I am calling customer service tomorrow and asking for a credit for the afternoons as I am paying for a service I am not getting. It is getting old.

Looking decent tonight. My upload is a bit slower since I have the non-powerboost speed QOS'd on the upstream side.

Only about 75% average downstream utilization tonight here. Better than the 100% I see sometimes. The HDHomeRun and TSReader shows you exactly what the issue is when things are slow.
