nmarshall posted : A few days ago our internet connection (Time Warner Road Runner) went down and my roommate was so mad because he was just about to buy something on woot.com during a "woot off." He was freaking out since this was the first "woot off" he'd ever seen. After trying to fix it for a few minutes I tried Google's IP address »64.233.187.99/ and it worked. Since »google.com wasn't working I knew Road Runner's DNS was down again.

I started thinking, "Hmm I remember reading about some free DNS servers out there... but how do I find them, without access to the internet?" I was able to trick google to do a search for "free dns server" then follow the google cache link, all with numeric IP addresses. There were no images and no CSS since no DNS names were being resolved. The first result was OpenDNS.com and the cached front page had their DNS servers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

The Road Runner DNS servers were down for hours but OpenDNS saved the day!

Kingcarcas posted : Haha, what's the Host name? I just set the DNS, cloned my MAC address but didn't enter a host name so i'm guessing that's why my internet went down  I reset it of course. Maybe i should just get openDNS they claim to have better reliability than most ISPs....

prestonlewis posted : Difference? Not really a difference using OpenDNS. If you don't plan to open a free acount, I see no big difference between OpenDSN and Level3s 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2 etc. However, if you do open an OpenDNS free account, you can filter a great deal like anti-phishing sites etc. You can also do some geo-location blocking (I block China for example or all web addresses ending in .cn). OpenDNS is as fast as other DNS servers that I've tried but no one offers filtering like OpenDNS does. Personally, I wouldn't need filtering but I have kids who can't recognize problem links.
