The U-Verse might be slower but it is consistent. For me, I'm fine with 6-7 megabits even, but the 1 megabit every night gets old real quick!

i havent really been paying much attention to this thread, since my problem got fixed back in october. But over the last 2 weeks, I am back to good old rotten speeds. 6-7 MBps at peak and 15-16 at non-peak. I am on premier which according to the latest ads are 25 MBps and 28 with PB. I have uverse install scheduled for feb 18th. So I am keeping my fingers crossed.

This is happening every day for over a year now. If you call cox you will eventually talk to someone that wants to send a tech to your house to check the problem. He will be wasting his time and yours. COX needs to split several nodes in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. They know the problem but unless several people on your node calls to complain they will ignore the problem as long as they can. 2 or 3 people on this post got lucky and cox split their nodes to fix the problem but, your odds are better at winning the lottery.

I just had 2 Cox Techs here who said there may be a problem with the L5 node being overloaded. They are going to address this and keep me informed. They also said they are splitting 3 other nodes around the Baton Rouge area. Sorry, i did not get the node #'s or specific areas to post here.
The important thing is they know and will address the slow downs in the evenings. This forum came in very handy as I was able to show the techs all the speed posts from everyone, giving them proof of our complaints. Thanks Cox and thanks to all who posted.

By the way. My speeds went in the toilet while they were here.

It is getting so I really can't live with this service. Not only can I not watch movies or play games I cannot stay connected to VPN at work.

As soon as AT&T calls me with Uverse availability I'm switching - unless Cox fixes this, which given the length of time this has been going on and the poor response is doubtful.

Perhaps what is happening is a combination of traffic density and the temperature. I am seeing PL% even to the first hop onto the br.cox.net network. I know there have been earlier instances, but perhaps this colder than normal temperature is causing issues that typically wouldn't rear their ugly heads in warmer weather?

I dunno. I do know that calling a tech is probably going to be pointless, as by the time they get here, the problem will have miraculously resolved itself. This really looks like a layer 1 issue though. Hope we warm back up soon :p

If you're in my area (70810), you may be commenting on the outage I wrote about on 12/18 and the good performance I've written about since. I was contacted in IM by a Cox tech both a few days before and after this outage, and he stated there was some work done on my node. I don't have any more details than that. But yeah, from my perspective, after a year of crummy performance in the evenings, it's feeling like it's fixed. Hopefully it will keep it up once the holidays are over and things are back to normal.

u wouldnt happen to have an ETA on the AT&T uverse coming here right. Some alternative for us is long overdue. I have been mailing Eatel to see if they have any plans of expanding into Baton Rouge, but so far nothing. Even at this dead of the night I am only getting 7Mbps(12:50 am)

Alas, I've found no such capability in the WRT610N firmware. It's pretty simplistic. About all you can do is prioritize based on port ranges and then give the setting the name of an "application", which really has nothing to do with the actual program generating the traffic. So what I said earlier about maybe using two different browsers, one for browsing and the other for HTTP downloading, won't even work.

OTOH, that sort of thing should be possible with the WRT610N. Update: It doesn't seem to work. Setting up port 21 for low priority and port 80 for high results in exactly the same behavior when doing a lengthy FTP download and trying to browse the web.

I use the Tomato firmware on a Buffalo router. I have the QOS set to automatically lower the priority of a HTTP transfer once it hits the 1 megabyte mark.

Have all my other bandwidth hoggers (NNTP, SMTP, POP3, FTP) etc set below HTTP.

Irregardless of who is pinging what, there is a time of day issue with our speeds. Pinging is merely represinting graphically the condition at the time of the issue. I know of no problems related to computer hardware that are time of day related.

Lets try to get back to civil responses and sharing of information. I am sure Cox Tech will not touch this thread with a 50ft pole atm. To kick that concept off, here is a speed test. Looks good right now.

Only that the 8+ years of having cox my default gateway has always been my IP address with a .1 at the end rather than the final IP.

I also have ~5 years prior to cox with bellsouth DSL which always had a .1 at the end.

I however do not claim to know how the cox service operates in terms of IP assignments which is why I mentioned that you may be pinging the modem and not the default gateway.

My only reason for mentioning that was to get off of the ethernet card to cable modem talk and put more focus on the time of day factor.

I don't know why you're inconsistently on again/off again. But I do know if you ping your

I understand your "peak hours" theory, BUT, when you ping the modem and get packet loss, the problem is within your network. It's got absolutely nothing to do with anything outside the very room in which your modem and computer lies.

I am in no way backing out of my stance. I originally stated the problem is between the ethernet card and the modem. I only used the router example because if you removed the coax from the modem you wouldn't be able to ping a gateway. I apologize for not explaining myself more thoroughly. The only thing that would make this theory not 100% accurate is if you try to ping the modem's gateway when the modem is not locked on, but you never mentioned that problem so I have unfortunately assumed that you're not having an intermittent connectivity issue. Am I correct in this assumption?

With that being said, don't go purchase another modem. Remember my original post: Simply call Cox and have them send a technician to your home. This technician should have a laptop and a test modem to help diagnose the problem.

I understand your disgust with this whole thread as you're only trying to find an answer to your packet loss. However, this is truly a problem that could have been diagnosed and repaired in a 30 minute service call weeks ago.

Your problem is not uncommon. I see this at LEAST once a month. It usually occurs after a power surge of some sort. The other posters may be having a similar problem but I will say that each problem is different in its own way. Almost 90% of the problems with video, HSI, and phone however, are from the tap to Customer Equipment.

The conspiracy theories about "peak hours" and "not enough bandwidth" are true in some cases... but most times they are repaired by a simple service call. Give these technicians a chance to do their work. This is what they're trained to do and they truly want to make sure you're happy with your service.

Good luck. I mean it. And let me know how the service call goes.

Chances are, the default gateway of your router is 192.168.1.1 or something relatively close if it's a Netgear or a Linksys. You can go to your command prompt, type in ipconfig to find it.

So... unfortunately I'm not wrong, as expected. As you should plainly see, you don't have to be connected to ping the gateway of the router.

And before you insult me please read the directions carefully. If you don't want the help simply ignore my posts. I do this because I care and all I'm trying to do is help.

P.S. If you can ping the default gateway of the router and not get packet loss, you've solved the problem because it's the ethernet port of the modem. If you still get packet loss, it's either the ethernet port of the computer or the cat5 jumper.

But my 10 year experience as a Home Service Tech with Time Warner Cable, a Data Tech(internet tech) with Charter Communications, and a Universal Home Tech (all 3 products) with Cox Communications tells me that if I try to ping the modem's gateway and experience packet loss, the problem is between the ethernet port of the computer and the modem itself. This is why I recommend he set up a trouble call to have a technician come to the house with a test modem and a laptop to prove my theory.

And if you don't believe what I say about pinging the gateway, disconnect your router from your modem and ping your router. You'll see that you don't need to be connected to ping the gateway.

I will NEVER give anyone inaccurate information. Based on what I read on these posts, I can offer an opinion on what I think the cause may be. However, in this case, I'm 100% sure it's between the ethernet port and the modem.

Disclaimer: This diagnosis applies ONLY if all the information presented by the original poster is accurate.

I'm telling ya, the problem is 100% between the ethernet card and the modem. Call Cox, have them send out a tech with a test modem and a laptop. He'll put his stuff on there and will be able to tell you which is bad. You can have this problem diagnosed in a day with a service call.

Your ping statistics are for 68.11.159.129 . What is that? Is that the default gateway of your modem? If that's the case you're getting packet loss between the Ethernet port of your computer and your modem... no further. Your problem lies there.
