| Switching someone from Sympatico
Hi Everyone,
just wondering, I know someone who might change from Sympatico to something else.
I see that there's Teksavvy and Velcom that are highly recommended, and I use VIF Internet which has caused me no problems in three years.
Any advantages/disadvantages these ISPs have?
Here are a few things to consider: -VIF SoftCap wouldn't be a problem. -Are the other ones providing decent support in French? -Is Teksavvy finally coming over the recent downtimes they have?
Thanks, Antoine |

  hmmm
@videotron.ca
| comes down to the pirce you want to pay and the B/W caps you want.
If you are from greenfield park and using VIF cable, then all VIF is. is a videotron reseller.
You can go with the more expensivse videotron package direct from videotron for about 65/month, 10-meg 100-gig. Or if you have a business number (or willing to get one), you can get videotron unlimited for under 70.
As you stated, videotron doesn't have problems worth mentioning. The forums prove this. Its a quality service, but you pay for that quality and speed.
If you want to go DSL (and some area's of greenfield park have copper lines that are 50 years old) then take your chances with the quality and speed you get with DSL.
your friend should get the same speed with teksavvy/velcom as he has with sympatico (most of the time).
Teksavvy would be your best bet. I haven't heard of Velcom having french rep's. Its possible that they do though. I just never read of it. |

It was VIF I said had no problems, while I have a lot of comments about dropouts with Videotron Internet and VoIP. (VoIP causes enough problems for those people to make them switch back to POTS)
Paying for cable Internet + connection fees isn't something considered, so I was thinking about what would be the best deal between VIF DSL, TekSavvy and Velcom.

Well, I get ~4300/600 with VIF on my side, but only since 1-2 weeks, I switched the wiring between the NID and modem to CAT5e about 6 weeks ago (a good part of the outdoor wiring was changed after the 1998 ice storm IIRC) and it seems to have made a good difference. I was being capped to ~2000/320 since the 3mbps to 5mbps "upgrade".
I don't know about the line quality for my friend on Sympatico though, the service is currently 2mbps "Essential Plus" with a 20GB cap for $30 per month. (While the others have a much higher cap and 5mbps for the same price)
As for Velcom support in French, maybe I should forget this, even the website doesn't have a language option.
So, I still have to choose between TekSavvy and VIF on DSL.
-TekSavvy has an higher usage cap, but it doesn't really change anything. -No QST with TekSavvy. -Could possibly rent modem with VIF on yearly contract (the problem is the one-time payment). -VIF rarely has service drops, while TekSavvy seems to have problems at the moment, but I'm sure it's just temporary. -Both are on Peer1 at the moment, but VIF seems to switch providers all the time. |

  sigh
@videotron.ca | oh thought u were on vif Cable service, not DSL.
I would go teksavvy. You get more for your money.
Also your online habits may not refelct your friends online habites. |
|
  go look
@videotron.ca | Also, if you pop into the teksavvy forum and create a topic called "Need a modem, and why chose teksavvy":
they will give you leads on modems for 20-50$.

As for the modem, I just placed a topic trying to know which one on the Caneris page is the better one. |

Let your grandmother try teksavvy and this give you the opportunity to see them also and compare to what you have.
There is NO contract with teksavvy so there is nothing lost.
If for some reason you are not satisfied, pack it up and leave teksavvy for VIF. Nothing lost... even the modem can be used with any other DSL company.
The only thing different is that your grandmother will save money and be better of than you are |

I must add that we love to work with grand-mother . We are able to send someone onsite from our company (not bell) locally in Montreal if there are problems. It might be a good point. |

| Shall I expect that cash filled envelope any time soon?
Poor grandma probably got bounced around at Sympatico more than a pinball machine that was operating for 10 years.
Did grandma by chance fall for Bell's advertising and was signed up to PC Care? |
