| Modem only connecting at 1.5 mbit?
So, I set up my new Westell 6100 and did what all good dslreports members would do first and did some speedtests. The best I could get was 1.5 mbit. I logged onto the modem and the modem is only connected at 1.5 mbit!
I called zoomtown support and they said that it would gradually increase up to whatever the line could handle over the first few weeks of service. Has anybody experienced anything like this? If so, how long did it take to get you up to speed? | |   Handyman007

| When they connected me, my modem was set to 1.5/768, not 5Mb/1Mb as promised by the salesman. So I called ZT tech and asked why...first time they tell me "well you really need to wait 2 weeks." So I did. Next call, "well it could take a month." So I waited a few days, but during that time, I tried something.
I work for a company that does DSL in another area and borrowed one of their DSL testers. My line test showed a max up of 896 and max down of 5312. So I know the line was good and that they didn't have my line provisioned correctly.
So I called them back again and told them I conducted this test, and informed a supervisor of the test results. He then said "OH!!" and changed the settings on his end. I checked the modem's settings (by the modem's web interface) and it was now provisioned for 5Mb/768Mb. However, a speed test was still showing 1.5/768.
After another 24 hours, the speed did in fact increase. I now get about 4300/650 in dsl speed tests.
According to our company's internet division (not Zoomtown), what happens is that cable modems are often provisioned for the lowest speeds if you are purcashing service from someone who resells another company's lines. In my town, CB is not the incumbent carrier (Verizon is). It is typically the incumbent carrier's fault, but not always. You can probably figure out the reason(s) for this.
Long story short, call up ZT and ask them to reprovision your DSL modem to 5MB. If they won't increase your line speed, demand a service tech come out and run a test with DSL equipment, or threaten to switch providers. Remember, it is possible that your line may not be capable of higher speeds, but it is always good to have them come out and run this test, just to be sure.
If your DSL modem is "connected" at 1.5Mbit, it can NEVER go faster than that, until they reprovision it at a higher speed. After it is provisioned at a higher speed, it will take some time (24-48 hrs) for the actual transmission speeds done by running speed tests to max out. | |  ff2366

| I had a 5MB line connection for the past year - all of the sudden I noticed my speed test went from 4.2mbps to less then 3.1. Sure enough, whem I checked the Westell box, the connection rate has shrunk to 3072 down and 768 up. I'll call them tomorrow and see why my speed was decreased 40% yet my bill didn't decrease 40%. | |   Anon1

| reply to mwa423 Couple of things to check - if you have an older house (15+ years) where the wiring is a mish/mash of copper, tied together from phone outlet, to phone outlet - then chances are that is causing some significant reduction throughput possible on the copper between the modem and the Cincinnati Bell central office where it connects to the internet. My suggestion if this is the case, run a new line from the demarcation box (the little grey box on the side of the house or down in the basement in the rafters of older homes where the thick cable comes off of the telephone pole). If you have a direct connection to that box, you eliminate all of the possible delays caused by splicing etc within the walls of your home - those splices and the such are the reasons behind the slow speeds your modem is able to obtain and maintain. Caution - if you have never installed telephone wiring - don't try now. Pay the $100 or so dollars and have a professional install the outlet. I have worked this issue for several family members and I have been able to consistently get them 3Mb+ when we adjust the home wiring situation. | |
