Please help I need information.

I understand the FCC mandates cable companies carry local broadcast channels in HD without needing a cable box.

I have an HDTV with the proper tuners built in. I used to get all local channels in HD. About 2 months ago WNBC and WABC New York disappeared in the HD format. I still get all other local channels in HD.

The service is with Comcast in East Orange New Jersey. I had two technicians come out to fix the problem. They were at a loss as was their supervisor. I had two HDTV with the proper tuners there and nether could get WNBC/WABC in HD. The same HDTVs get those channels in HD in a Cablevision area.

Will someone point me to the FCC regulation that mandates must carry HD for local channels also does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

Thank you in advance for any and all help.

They are only required to carry the standard definition channel unencrypted. Theres no law that requires they do.

Why be so political? I'm a liberal Democrat, but how does saying this help you with your answer? It only turns off people who might not share your views and out of spite not help you.

Regardless, a simple search of the FAQ would give you an open door to getting a resolution for your friend:
»Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »How do I contact the Comcast Executive Complaint Center? I know of several people who have contacted them and have received nothing but positive experiences.

Also, just to double check, have you re-scanned your channels? It is possible they have moved those two channels to a different frequency. It's certainly worth a shot. There is nothing in any FCC regs that says they can't change the frequency whenever they want.

As for having to provide local HD in clear QAM, most providers do, but since the FCC regs are written as clear as mud either side can argue whether they should or not. I would try rescanning and then take it from there.

I have filed an FCC complaint and will file a BPU complaint today. I was hoping I did not have to go nuclear but with Comcast nothing is easy.

I had two technicians at the location and they could not fix or explain the problem. I will get an answer.

Batterup, I see you didn't respond to my questions, have you rescanned for QAM channels? Since you didn't specifically say you did I just want to make sure you're not going through a whole bunch of effort when there may be something simple preventing you from getting these channels.

I don't have a link, but Cox in Omaha Nebraska lost the the HD versions of CBS and ABC since they wanted paid for the HD signal and the FCC couldn't help.

We now have them both back.

Yes I and two Comcast technicians scanned several times on two different HDTVs with QAM tuners. I used to get all local broadcast stations in HD until two months ago. I then lost WNBC and WABC in HD. I still get both in analog and SD digital.

I just called the FCC and was told cable companies do not have to deliver local broadcast stations in HD unless I rent a converter form them.

What did the FCC tell you and why would Cox give HD for free if they can force one to rent a converter?

I have Cablevision in my home and get all local broadcast stations in HD without a converter. Why wouldn't all cable companies block all HD and force one to rent a converter if they could?

I live on the same system as you. Here is where the channels are available:
104.1 13 WNET-HD
104.2 11 WPIX-HD
104.3 9 WWOR-HD
104.4 2 WCBS-HD
104.5 7 WABC-HD
104.6 4 WNBC-HD
104.7 5 WNYW-HD

I was using a Sharp Aquos with a QAM tuner. None of these channels are encrypted. For some reason, scanning did not pick up the digital channels where it did in the past. If I manually tune them in, they are there.

Comcast will fight to the death before they admit that you can get local HD channels w/o their equipment. That conversation log is rediculous.

they don't force people to rent converters. They reason the ABC and CBS affliates where pulled because they wanted cox to pay for a free signal. I would suggest you ask your friends if they have comcast if they can view the HD.

it sounds like you are not using cable cards. Is your area using SDV?

Maybe you should ask comcast for a qam channel number for those two since you can't find them.

I don't think the call centers have access to the actual QAM tuner information since that's usually done by the engineers and headends, and is subject to change without any notice required like display channel numbers.

What would be easier to determine the QAM location for your system if for some reason your auto-scan doesn't grab it, would be to looks at the diagnostics on a regular cable box and see what frequencies it's tuning too. If you don't have a box, usually you will have a friend or neighbor on your system you might be able to ask or get the info from.

I think the diags give you a frequency#, and there are places online where you can get the EIA channel from that frequency #. I don't remember off the top of my head if you can also get the MPEG number for the digital channel from the diags as well.

That's wrong. Those are the SD channels for the locals.

The HD channels are scattered. ABC and NBC are on EIA ch 32.

You're right

32.1 4 WNBC-HD
32.2 7 WABC-HD

The point is they are both there and unencrypted.

That's correct

Except on my TV they map to the right locations...4-1, 7-1, etc. So even if I tune to 32.1 it goes to 4-1.
