AT&T is struggling with more then one HD stream at the same time to the house, let alone watching one on 1 TV, watching 1 on another AND recording a 3d... which happens in my house all the time.

AT&T can't give you any more upload past 1 Mbps. Even my cable is 2 Mbps upload now, and FIOS is offering 20/20 connections, and the 20/5 connections are pretty affordable.
Hmm - I'm pretty sure that AT&T has been offering 2SD+2HD.
Also, AT&T has 10/1.5 and 18/1.5 connections (TWC has 10/1 here).
My TWC can do two HD streams in the living room (DVR) and one in my computer room without a problem. And provide 15/2 internet at the same time.

You can do 4HD in certain areas with AT&T, but not in combination with 18/1. Want 3 of 4 HD streams, you are stuck with 6 Mbps internet for now. I can add 5 more HDTV's and still have my 15/2 internet.

I'm not saying u-verse doesn't have it's place, but the technology used has already reached it's ceiling before it's even implemented on a widespread scale.

I'm not, obviously, saying that copper is as good as fiber to the home, but you are unnecessarily negative about what AT&T can do with copper and where they stand competitively.

"Their biggest competitor is laying fiber" -- assuming you mean Verizon FIOS, they are not a competitor at this time, they serve different cities/neighborhoods (with very few exceptions). U-verse's competition is primarily cable, and they are adding subs and cities about as fast as they can.

"Struggling with more than one HD stream" -- where do you get the "struggling" part? 2HD/2SD is deployed everywhere now. A few customers who are at the fringes of range from the VRAD can only get 1HD.

"No upload past 1Mbps" -- geez do some simple research, they offer 1.5 megabit uploads in the two top tiers. And again comparisons to FIOS are not germane because they don't compete.

"Time to ditch copper and switch to fiber" -- this is a very simplistic view of the situation. First, AT&T U-verse DOES support FTTH, in new greenfield developments where fiber is laid to start with. Second, it's really not an "either-or". The VRAD deployment brought the fiber within 3000 feet of the customer, it's just the last 1/2 mile that needs to be upgraded when it's time to fatten the pipe all the way to the home.

And, the fact that powered, intelligent, active VRADs are in place everywhere, and that they are already on video over IP, means that they can be much more flexible in distributing capability throughout their network, as compared to the usual passive optical or DOCSIS network, which only has powered equipment back at the office.

Not everyone has access to FIOS or even a cable provider who is worth a damn. For those of us who are stuck with our DSL connections and crappy cable providers who have no plans of upgrading to DOCSIS 3.0, VDSL is a glimmer of hope.

Copper is still great for cable companies, they can milk it for a while longer with DOCSIS 3.

But this trial business with doing "theoretical 40 mbps at 5,000 feet" while their biggest competitor is laying fiber that can already support 100 Mbps, and if FIOS nodes get upgraded from 622 Mbps connections shared between 50 FIOS users to something in the Gbps, they are ready for the future.

AT&T is struggling with more then one HD stream at the same time to the house, let alone watching one on 1 TV, watching 1 on another AND recording a 3d... which happens in my house all the time.

They are betting on the wrong horse here. Time to ditch copper and switch to fiber deployment..... I know this may not be the right time to admit "technological defeat" after they have made so many promises to investors.... but c'mon:

Verizon? Can offer 50 Mbps connections already with FIOS. And that being said most major European telco's are deploying fiberoptics to the home, knowing that this is the only way to the future.

Cable? Is deploying DOCSIS 3.0, and several cable companies have been offering 50 Mbps type connections in select cities in both Europe and the US.

AT&T? Will test something in 2009 which theoretically can get you 40 Mbps. If within the right distance.

By the time most cable networks are DOCSIS 3.0, which is really their only DIRECT competitor when it comes to providing internet to homes, they will find themselves obsolete.

I have a DVR that records 2 HDTV streams, I have a computer with 2 monitors and a TV card that receives the QAM HD channels, and I would not surprise me with the way my wife slurps up FoodHD and HGTV-HD that we are using 3 HD streams almost daily. AT&T just doesn't seem to get that even 4 HDTV streams that they can offer in select areas by bonding the copper (but not at the same time a 18 Mbps connection, only a 6 Mbps one if you want 4 HDTV streams) that they are getting hopelessly obsolete, fast?

They really need to examine fiber deployment. Now.
