lotusracer : all of you east of the Mississippi River, here we go again:

Well, here is our forecast for the next couple of days:

Snow tonight into tomorrow morning - Snow will start late this evening towards midnight and continue into the morning hours as warmer air lifts in. We'll look for an inch or two of accumulation by morning as we catch a short lull in the snow. Then it picks up again by late morning and continues through the day tomorrow. By the end of the day Tuesday, we expect about 1"-3" of snow on the ground. A Winter Weather Advisory is posted for the entire area for this snow.

More snow Tuesday into Wednesday - The main push of energy moves our way Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. So snow will continue Tuesday night and wrap up by early afternoon on Wednesday. Winds will also increase Wednesday as the storm pushes east, so blowing and drifting will be a concern after the snow stops. Storm totals by Wednesday will likely be in the 4" to 7" range from the Quad Cities east and in the 2"-4" for the rest of the area. A Winter Storm Watch has been posted for the entire area for this snow.

Clear Christmas Day - Thursday looks to be cold, but calm. This is the best day to travel.

Icy mix Thursday night through Saturday - We could see a mix of light snow and/or freezing drizzle. That changes to freezing rain and rain on Friday with significant rain possible Friday night into Saturday. This raises concerns for flooding because of a combination of rain runoff and snow melt. Ice jamming could also be a problem on rivers. Dense fog may be an issue with the precipitation and melting snow. Cold air moves back in late Saturday morning changing things from rain to freezing rain and then back to snow. The uncertainty of the precipitation type makes it tough to put a finger on any snow amounts right now. But the point being it will likely be rough out there for Friday into Saturday.

Our latest forecast data is slowing the system down a little and keeping the ice farther south which will mean higher snow totals for the Quad Cities. We expect sleet and snow to break out this evening briefly before changing over to freezing rain for areas to the south and snow to the north through the overnight. We expect as much as a quarter to half inch of ice accumulation for areas south of the Quad Cities. From the QCA north where things will be colder, we will see more snow than ice. Snow totals will range from 3"-6" from I-80 to Hwy 30 and anywhere from 6" to 12" north of Hwy 30.
