1 edit | Vista IE 7 Freeze Soild, can't close or get desktop I have been noticing IE freezing and not responding when doing random tasks for more than a month. For instance, while surfing this forum, it froze, I can't close it, ALT-F4 don't work, goto desktop don't work, it just sits there and the "busy" icon shows when I hover over it.
I don't know what's doing it, thought maybe someone here may be getting this also.

1 edit | Try crap cleaner and defrag your drive and if you get the FREE Tuneup,2007 I can bet you will have more than 200+ errors fixed. I asked somebody else to report back after using the FREE Tuneup and nadda; guess some people just don't get it.
Runing IE7, all updates and Opera10, now Opera gives a couple of twinks IE does not. I also have IE7 locked down, no ActiveX, scripting or Java.
Just a thought.
OoPS, here: »[Free] TuneUp Utilities 2007 - free full lic.
Sorry. |

Meh, their loss. I've used it for 3+ years and found it to be a great product. It's what Norton Utilities and PC Tools USED to be years ago. -- Tradition: Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. --despair.com |

tupPremium join:2001-01-15 Port Elgin, ON | Yeah, I'm having the same problem with Flash 10 and IE7. Random freezes and the only way out is Ctrl>Alt>Delete, start the Task Manager and kill the IE process. |

|
 | Is there a way to insert Shockwave as the preferred software instead of Flash 10. I too suspect that it is the problem since I have had similar problems as noted above since updating.

Adobe Flash Un-Installer
You can download Adobe Flash Player from versions 8 through to 10, and version un-installers from the link below. Hope these links help.
Downloadable Versions of Adobe Flash Player
I have reverted back to the last version of Flash Player 9. -- If I knew then, what I know now. I would have still made the same mistakes. |

| I wouldn't have handled it that way, simply uninstall Macromedia and Adobe; apparently the secdrv.sys has nothing to with your possible problem and the atmfd.dll can be overwritten by downloaded malware, that could cause a problem, but again uninstall Adobe and reinstall a good copy and careful what freeware you try for in the future. |
|
 | reply to Sindows 7 I have no freeware, I tried re-installing flash, uninstalling, ect. |

| Those two are for Macromedia and Adobe, as you have anti virus it just seemed less likely for a virus and more likely for a new/missed malware, overwriting the atmfd.dll.
So, apparently by partially corrupting the reg file, things now work better?? uninstall what Macromedia products and Adobe you have (Flash is part of that mix and shockwave)- Hutch provided a direct link to the uninstaller, should get you started. Then after rebootibg do a fresh install.
I don't know if the free TuneUp2007 is still an option and don't know how it interacts with VISTA; there is always TuneUp2009 -Pretty much automates everything I used to do manually and picks up some problems I generally missed. Mentioned because if this is not malware, then what you have is a need for a good method to do some house cleaning, but appropriately.
--Deleting those two files won't achieve much if that's all you did, they will in fact reinstall post boot; they are not isolated but shared files. |

I get this kind of thing when downloading McAfee virus updates. It seems like the dual core CPU will max out at 100 percent for about five seconds, which then it releases Windows back to the user. I updated Windows Vista with SP1 and have yet to see this problem occur. I wonder if the problem is from the monthly service patches with regards to how it relates to Internet Explorer. I don't use Internet Explorer so I've never experienced this problem. --

| If it's not Enterprise, McAfee is better avoided. Though I still think he has an issue with maintenance rather than malware @ this point, or/ an owned .dll file.
On the whole I think, perhaps he is not heading the the advice provided. At the least, he is not contributing to a real fix for his problem, nor answering in a meaningful fashion. @ this point the onus is on him to properly describe the issue. |

 | reply to Sindows 7 quote: Workarounds for Macrovision Driver Vulnerability - CVE-2007-5587
Workaround refers to a setting or configuration change that does not correct the underlying vulnerability but would help block known attack vectors before you apply the update. Microsoft has tested the following workarounds and states in the discussion whether a workaround reduces functionality:
Disable the secdrv.sys driver
Disabling the secdrv.sys driver in the system registry key helps protect affected systems from attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
Note: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or view the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe.

| Now we are getting somewhere, you didn't simply delete, you changed the value -That's entirely a different approach and though you did this, are you claiming the vulnerability caused you the problem? If so, then you have a lot more to worry about that has not been discussed. Changing a value can plug a hole, after the fact is too late.
I still think this is a maintenance issue and not an owned problem. Have you tried a utility of any kind that factors in on reg files? If I'm wrong, then you have a rootkit. |
