handset upgrade fee...

Is basically a B.S. fee (administrative?)
Its almost as if you're being penalized to renew a contract.

There's no real reason for it - as you're already paying for the device and the service.

Eg. I can get (from AT&T) a Moto RAZR V3xx for an over priced amount of $129 (or less + pay for extra services). I can also go to CompUSA and pay a similar amount.. and not have to pay for $18 upgrade fee or be in a contract.

Yup... its a bs fee indeed. I wish Sprint would drop theirs... frickin $34 "new device" activation fee for a phone thats already been previously activated.

Maybe this will be the beginning of similar removals of BS fees from other carriers.... I can hope.

I doubt it... it will just be passed off as another fee, or rate increase somewhere (sms costs fractions of a penny, yet people are charged up to $0.25/message ).

I think they'll just bury it in the cost of the handset.

Actually its 50 cents /message when you consider the double dipping providers do on sms
$0.25 to send then another $0.25 to receive!

I switch phones all the time, and just upgraded to a Sprint HTC Touch Diamond and didn't get charged any kind of upgrade or activation fee. I got it in store

Sprint will "upgrade" you for free if you call on Arbor day during a total eclipse of the sun while listening to the Marine Corps band playing Home on the Range and watching a badminton match between two guys named Ichabod. (whew!)
