[DVR] Transfer from old DVR to new ?

My father in law just got a new tv and in the process he upgraded from a standard DVR to an HD-DVR. The old one has a USB hookup but no ethernet, the new one has ethernet. Would I be able to transfer the video from the old DVR onto my laptop and then transfer them to the new one via ethernet ? After the reading I have done I don't see why this would be a problem but I wanted to check with some knowledgable people. Thanks

ps. it is Direct... I can get the model #s of the DVRs if I need to.

Well with no computer in between, just matching the USB to ethernet would be a problem. And that would mess up the proprietary format to combat digital off platform copying. (The concession made to copyright holders to allow digital recording at all... no redistribution)

I don't think DTV does yet but DISH's newest DVRs do allow external hard drives... so while not DVR to DVR you could copy DVR to HDD, and then attach that to another.

Either company though if an older DVR... likely SOL, dub the stuff off to DVD's or something if you really want to keep it.

Also most DVR's will still operate as playback devices of their contents, after deauthorized or no longer connected to a dish. If you don't have to return the DVR. (Owned not leased)

Unless you're planning on doing some interesting hacks (which to the best of my knowledge have never been successful), you can't do what you want. DirecTV encrypts the stream that's on the DVR hard drive, and uses the smart card id to forever link that drive and its contents to that particular receiver. People who've taken the drives out of the DVRs and hooked them up to a PC basically see nothing - no files - because of the format used.

The newer DirecTV branded DVRs can use an external SATA drive (which disables the internal drive) - but the same as above applies. The hard drive cannot be connected to another DVR, even the same model, and be 'read'.

Your option is to use a DVD recorder, and that's about it.

Really? With the DISH ones, both drives are active, and the external can be moved from receiver to receiver. Its stil encrypted as far as taking the data off system, but they can be moved around, though likely still keyed to only receivers on your account.
