Not to either defend or dis him, since I know nothing about him, but just speaking generally, wouldn't an engineer be less likely to be able to manage all the wheeling and dealing this position seems to entail? As long as this guy knows what he DOESN'T know, and knows where to go to get that information, the choice would be miles ahead of Martin. At least he seems to have a better grasp of the possibilities of the internet - not just the ones the telcos and cablecos tell him exist.
Besides replacing Martin is great CHANGE.

Genachowski came to the Commission in 1994 as Special Counsel to General Counsel William E. Kennard. He became Counsel to Chairman Hundt in March 1995 and Chief Counsel to the Chairman in December 1996.
At the FCC, Genachowki was responsible at various times for mass media, cable, wireless and international issues.

Sounds like he will be anti-telco/pro-CLEC/socialism/nationalizing/forfeiture, and will probably be bribed up by cable cos with a face of "supporting competition". I'm not sure if the Telecom Act 1996/what made CLECs, was Clinton's making, or Congress's making. |

Unbundling worked everywhere else it's been tried but here--- because we refused to enforce it then scrapped it.
It wasn't a bad idea. It was just not supported.

We don't want someone "wheeling and dealing", having their ear bent by special interest groups and lobbyist. We want someone that looks at the technologies and makes the decisions based upon how those technologies can be best applied to help the people. |

| "Wheeling and dealing" does not always equate to being in somebody's pocket. The point is you need someone in this position who knows how to negotiate, present the case to people who know next to nothing about technology, and be able to see other aspect other than the technical side.
Remember the FCC just isn't about deploying the latest Internet protocols. They have to keep the balance between the needs of the public and the needs of the communication businesses. They need to keep the balance between regulation and market trends. That takes somebody who can make deals. An engineer would ONLY look at the technology and the ways to deploy it. There is much more to do than that.
If you ask me a lawyer who knows the technology, but isn't geeking over it is the best choice. For too long we have had mini-politicians head the FCC who know next to nothing about the technology they are peddling other than what the industry tells him. This is a step up. |

| Maybe and maybe not. Unless you have some proven history that this guy is a paid crone you're really just speculating (i.e. blowing wind past your teeth). Only time will tell. Either way we KNOW without a fact our current FCC boss is a tool so at the very least we are getting this guy out of the game. |
