| could not bind to transport - - - -
Hello!
Does anyone have a simple plain english answer to why my winxp pro machine gives the following error ?
I use comcast
error-
The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{B98A8267-1108-46AA-88A1-B269173BEF74} because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start.
This has just started happening the last 3 days |

| Do you have any wireless or wired bridges or is this machine currently connected via another network device?
If the answer is no, then we will take the error message literally. To fix the problem, right click on My Computer and choose Properties, then choose the Computer Name tab, and give your computer a different name (something you've never used before elsewhere). After making that change, you will need to reboot your computer. -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon -- KJ7RL What you do at Christmas does not matter so much; What counts are the Christmas things you do all year through. |

OK That seems to have taken care of the name error issues.
The only other thing is i am back to a 1 hour lease time and it does not matter which machine is connected to the internet.
Thanks Funchords for the info that fixed the problem.
Still have not figured out which button means the problem has been solved . |

| 1 hour lease normally means that Comcast is doing some sort of maintenance in your area. -- Write me up a 125.......I Can't Drive 55 »redrocker.com/ »cabowabo.com/ |

Well a network admin friend of mine said the following means comcast is up to something not very good, and for whom who knows:
My machine has been off for several hours and when i started ip up i started getting attacks on port 5000. He did a virus/trojan check nothing. This is a single machine with winxp pro only on it.
this is where the attacks start from:
c-71-205-129-180.hsdl1.mi.comcast.net , now this resolves to 71.205.129.180 which is comcast.net !!
So he is just guessing but figures the guys at comcast have
1. some kind of virus / trojan running on their system or
2. some reason felt the need to try to access the port in question.
Just gathering more info at this time. Should be interesting to see what comcast is up to. This happened about 1 week ago and i called and it stopped but it is back more times.
He has also ran wireshark and got some interesting info. |

This actually "resolves" to: ... which is a block of approximately 65,000 IP addresses which are assigned to Comcast HSI customers in the Michigan area. What you are seeing is not "Comcast" probing your connection, but a compromised Comcast customer's computer probing your connection. I get a relatively small (compared with Verizon and Road Runner) number of spam delivery attempts from similarly named Comcast hosts.
Its just a residential Comcast HSI customer whose been owned.

1 edit | This is a typical designation for a customer address:
c-71-205-129-180.hsdl1.mi.comcast.net
The hsd1.(state).comcast.net signifies this is a customer premise address.
We assign DNS A and PTR records to the CPE blocks for secure web services. As NormanS pointed out, this is just a large block of customer space and most likely an infected customer. You can certainly report your finding to abuse(at)comcast.net so they can help resolve this issue for the other customer.
Thanks
