Metal Detector Question

Ok so I was trying to make a snowball and it wouldn't pack so I shook off my hands and my wedding ring went flying. At night. In about 6 inches of snow on the ground. No idea where it went but have a general idea. My question is what metals can a metal detector pick up? My ring is made out of titanium.

it'd probably be detected as its probably an alloy and only "titanium plated"

Ok. Hope this idea works. Not that it was a super expensive ring as most guy's wedding rings aren't but it's just that it's my wedding ring man. I'm super pissed at myself and bummed. Means alot to me and I feel naked nowadays without it on. Just couldn't have happened at a worse time (Christmas Eve for crying out loud and just after getting home from Christmas Eve service at church!).

Modern metal detectors can detect just about any conductive metal or ore. You could also just rake up everything in the area and throw it in a bucket.

Most newer metal detectors can pick up all kinds of metals such as gold, silver, copper, ferrous metals and nonferrous. I just got one but I haven't learned how to use it yet(still reading the manual).
You might check and see if there are any metal detecting clubs in your area and see if they could help you out.

Red,
I've got over 6 inches of snow and the area is pretty big that it could be in. My luck it flew into the stupid bushes we have.

Some good info at »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_detectors , but take it with a grain of salt. Seems doable if, like some others have posted, you seek out a local club and get some first-hand info, or from a reputable dealer.

I lost my wedding ring once, but was fortunate to find it fairly quickly, so I can relate.

Good luck and hope this helps.

quick... go to the singles bar!!

couldn't help myself. little to no experience with detectors, but i suggest you do a methodical search with the thing making sure to mark the areas that you cover (draw lines in the snow or something) so you can cover the whole yard.

perhaps make a quick fake ring out of foil or wire and try to recreate the incident to see where it flies?

good luck

And just hope a squirrel didn't carry it off somewhere.

Recreated wouldn't the fake become lost too?

METHANOL!!!!!

Well, maybe not. Don't know what it would do to the vegetation. When I worked the gas fields, I used to use it to melt the snow if I dropped a bolt or something. It would clear the snow without moving the small item I was looking for. Works very well, but I was usually at a well site where it was just dirt under the snow.

A true story that I hope will make you feel better:

I lost my wedding band last year. I had replaced the faucet in the kitchen, and had removed my wedding band as I was up to my wrists in plumber's grease. After cleaning up my work, I couldn't find my ring anywhere.

I searched the kitchen, dumpster diving for the trash bags I threw out, but no joy.

I ended up buying a replacement band that was an ordeal in itself (not the same type of gold, and I believe the jeweler's order taking company stole my CC info).

Then about three months later, as the snow was melting, my wife happen to see something shiny on the ground, by the bushes near our front entry door. There in the patchy snow and dirt, was my lost wedding band! I am completely unsure how it got there, but it sat waiting for my wife to find it, yet stayed unseen by all of the people who travel past that door each day.

I hope your ring finds its way home to you...
