If cox is going to disable peoples internet...

...they probably should provide a more efficient way of dealing with the problem.

I woke up to the internet not working with a cryptic message saying that I needed to call a customer service number. The customer service rep said that I needed to call a 800 number and give them a ticket so they could solve the problem. Easy enough.

However... The number rings busy constantly (many, many calls over a wide variety of times and days) and normal tech support pretty much said there is nothing they can do and to deal with it.

So I dealt with it by canceling my Cox service.

Just a tip: Cox should get a number that at least answers and puts people in a queue. Ring-busy on a service number that is apparently *the only* way to resolve a problem is a sure way to lose many customers.

Re: If cox is going to disable peoples internet...

It sounds like you may have been shutdown for abuse reasons. Do you (did you) check your cox.net email because that is where any warnings would have been sent to. Of course, this is all a guess on my part. If you register with BBR, a Cox tech can look into your account and tell you what happened if you are still interested.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can imagine it had something to do with my router encryption being reset a while back and me not noticing it until the internet was gone. But thats the hazards of wifi in an apartment complex.

I never set up a cox email address so I wouldn't have gotten any messages if they had sent it that way.

At this point I have pretty much moved on to my new ISP. I just wanted to stop by and leave a little constructive criticism on their choice of telephone support options.

Again, thanks for the reply.

Immediately throwing out the "router not encrypted"

Yeah sounds like suspension for abuse.

Take care.

Re: If cox is going to disable peoples internet...

you might want to click on the registration button and see about getting help on here. I would bug them for a refund for your troubles. (politely)

not a very smart move on cox's part. if they want to keep customers, i think an actual physical letter (not an email) should have been given prior to shut down.

it looks like ISP's are becoming monitors for the MafIAA. They can kiss my ass.

are you on DSL now?

Re: If cox is going to disable peoples internet...

Yes I jumped on to the local AT&T affiliate DSL service.

I really don't care about getting any compensation. I would have stayed with Cox had they had a decent way of dealing with this problem. I just didn't have the time to constantly call a phone number hoping that I would get through. Being told to deal with it really didn't help either, but the main problem lies withs Cox choice to implement a poor customer service system for dealing with these issues.

Running an open wifi can lead to others leeching to the point where you end up sucking too much bandwidth in a best case or you get a child porn ring or predator or terrorists in a worst case. I imagine there are circumstances that can get you kicked off without any warning.

Re: If cox is going to disable peoples internet...

I hear you on the encryption. I'm kicking myself for not having checked it more often to make sure it was still working. However, since they probably only tried to contact me by the cox email I never had, it wasn't that big of a deal.

Re: If cox is going to disable peoples internet...

You always have a cox email address, even if you don't "set it up". It is set up for you when you sign up for new service. I had to call months later to even find out what my account email address was so I could set it to forward any messages to the only account I use, my Gmail account.

you should have a email address as one is assigned by default apon service activation and they most likely did send a email to that address

Sorry you had that experience. I've given our VP of customer care a heads up to check up on this process.

Thank you for looking in to this. Although I am not a cox customer anymore, it will hopefully help out others who may be having the same issue.

Here are some more details to help out your investigation. The number I was given was 1-800-753-6085 (confirmed by 3 cox phone reps along with that it was a 24/7 number) Currently it is still ringing busy.

I was told once by an abuse tech if you use a cellphone w/ an area code that isn't serviced by cox...the number doesn't go thru...I know I have a cellphone based out of NY and it didn't go thru at the time...was some time ago though.

Nonsense, most area codes arent serviced by Cox. if that was true it wouldn't be the PSTN.

They aren't forced to do squat. They choose to. Especially because they are also in the TV business.

Which is why I am considering bailing from AT&T (now also in the TV business: Uverse) for another DSL provider.

Still depends upon how much AT&T listens on the Last Mile, though. If Sonic has to provision the loop through an AT&T DSLAM I suspect I am still hosed (even if Sonic had their own ATM circuit to the CO).

Sure enough, this was it. I was trying with two different CO area code cell phones and neither one would connect. I tracked down a local phone to call and it rang right away. It seems a little strange to only accept calls from Cox serviced area codes especially in today's world of cell-phone only households.

Actually that has nothing to do with us. It's the cellphone provider not routing the call properly.

Walther

Re: If cox is going to disable peoples internet...

Of the two cells that didnt work, one is verizon and the other is t-mobile. The third cell phone with a local area code that worked is also verizon.

It seems strange that one verizon would route the call correctly while another which is right next to it would not, and neither would the t-mobile.

actually if the number is not setup to accept ALL area codes then the call will not go through. that is a setting that the company who owns the number needs to update. in this case i believe that would be Cox Communications.

I've heard tales of people in CT not being able to dial the abuse number. They get a message about out of area calls not accepted.

I just did a wifi scan and found that 3 of 4 networks available to me, only 1 (mine), is encrypted. Is this ratio wide spread?

Intersting question.

That's about what I saw a couple of years ago; however today, I see far fewer "unsecured" private wireless access points (WAPs).

That said, many of today's WAPs are still only "secured" w/ WEP.

I've never seen an unsecured WLAN in my neighborhood; I didn't test their encryption, though. I normally leave my wireless disabled. I wired my premises, and don't need wireless.

Well, whenever I see an SSID of "linksys" (or similar default), it's pretty much universally not locked.

No.. I used to see most networks unsecured... but now, whether I'm home, traveling, or at a public location - most WiFi networks are secure.

A screenshot for my home for example »img175.imageshack.us/img175/9638/wificg4.png

When I moved in 2 years ago.. I had the only secure network.. now all but 2 of them are.

While running an open WiFi connection is not against the law or policy, it is your responsibility should shady traffic be originating from your connection. I've seen many instances where abuse has shut down customers for P2P traffic. In my experience, they usually send you a letter in the mail; sometimes Certified. In other instances, I've seen an immidiate shut down of the connection that is remedied quite rapidly when corporate is contacted at the 800 number. Phone routing aside, a simple phone-call, a slap on the hand and your connection would have been restored. At least that is my experience with it.

A company as large as Cox must protect itself from litigation too. Should they not act when copyright laws are broken by people utilizing their network, they could become liable too. In this economic climate, I doubt it's a smart business move to leave themselves open to such litigation. Just the way I see it.

Similar to my experience.. I guess it depends on what type of complaints Cox is receiving... All I got was a simple e-mail telling me that I've been naughty and that I should turn off seeding/sharing to prevent further abuse tickets.

Nope. They have safe harbor under the law. As long as they notify the subscriber of the takedown notices or accusations of infringement, they retain safe harbor status and cannot be held responsible for the actions of the users.... which is perfectly reasonable.

Can the phone company be held liable because someone phones in a bomb threat? Nope.

In case anyone is unaware, Linksys/Cisco has a HUGE problem with a number of their routers getting reset to factory default configuration due to short term power disruptions. Like during wind storms when tree branches short the power lines. On, off, on, off, on, off. Maybe some areas in the US do not have these problems, however in my area we have a lot of trees and most of the main power distribution is above ground. This is why I have a 12 kW generator!!

I have installed a large number of the Linksys/Cisco WRT-54G routers and it seems from Version 4 to at least Version 6 hardware, they all get reset to factory default on a fairly regular basis if they are not on UPS systems. Do not know much about version newer than 6 or other specific Linksys/Cisco hardware platforms, nut the WRT-54G product line has some SERIOUS problems.

Seems Linksys/Cisco cheapened up the hardware and also at the same time worked on some sort of anti bricking or brick recovery hardware/firmware in the newer units and this caused the problem. It appears that Linksys/Cisco has not stepped up and really acknowledged this problem and it also appears that newer firmware updates do not correct the problem.

Assume that other vendors may have some level of similar problems, however, I found out the hard way after a large number of these units were deployed in the field that WRT-54G units are really a problem.

There are other situations where consumers are unaware of how to set up wireless security, but I blame the router vendors for not shipping routers with some level of wireless security enabled. Many other ISP's that provide hardware, ship all their hardware with the wireless secured to some level out of the box.

Just food for thought, but I can attest 100% that Linksys/Cisco has a big problem with the WRT-54G platform on newer hardware version. Long live the WRT-54G version 3 and earlier platforms, have had little to no problem with the earlier hardware.

BTW Cox, why not also include a long distance area code phone number (non toll free) and an e-mail address for customers to contact in the basic form letters. This way customers have more than a single way to contact the "abuse" department. I would also assume in some cases customers could call the typical local support Cox support number and then the call could be transferred/connected by the local Cox group.

YMMV, just passing along information and suggestions.
