actually if the number is not setup to accept ALL area codes then the call will not go through. that is a setting that the company who owns the number needs to update. in this case i believe that would be Cox Communications.
I've heard tales of people in CT not being able to dial the abuse number. They get a message about out of area calls not accepted.

In case anyone is unaware, Linksys/Cisco has a HUGE problem with a number of their routers getting reset to factory default configuration due to short term power disruptions. Like during wind storms when tree branches short the power lines. On, off, on, off, on, off. Maybe some areas in the US do not have these problems, however in my area we have a lot of trees and most of the main power distribution is above ground. This is why I have a 12 kW generator!!

I have installed a large number of the Linksys/Cisco WRT-54G routers and it seems from Version 4 to at least Version 6 hardware, they all get reset to factory default on a fairly regular basis if they are not on UPS systems. Do not know much about version newer than 6 or other specific Linksys/Cisco hardware platforms, nut the WRT-54G product line has some SERIOUS problems.

Seems Linksys/Cisco cheapened up the hardware and also at the same time worked on some sort of anti bricking or brick recovery hardware/firmware in the newer units and this caused the problem. It appears that Linksys/Cisco has not stepped up and really acknowledged this problem and it also appears that newer firmware updates do not correct the problem.

Assume that other vendors may have some level of similar problems, however, I found out the hard way after a large number of these units were deployed in the field that WRT-54G units are really a problem.

There are other situations where consumers are unaware of how to set up wireless security, but I blame the router vendors for not shipping routers with some level of wireless security enabled. Many other ISP's that provide hardware, ship all their hardware with the wireless secured to some level out of the box.

Just food for thought, but I can attest 100% that Linksys/Cisco has a big problem with the WRT-54G platform on newer hardware version. Long live the WRT-54G version 3 and earlier platforms, have had little to no problem with the earlier hardware.

BTW Cox, why not also include a long distance area code phone number (non toll free) and an e-mail address for customers to contact in the basic form letters. This way customers have more than a single way to contact the "abuse" department. I would also assume in some cases customers could call the typical local support Cox support number and then the call could be transferred/connected by the local Cox group.

YMMV, just passing along information and suggestions.

No.. I used to see most networks unsecured... but now, whether I'm home, traveling, or at a public location - most WiFi networks are secure.

When I moved in 2 years ago.. I had the only secure network.. now all but 2 of them are.

Nope. They have safe harbor under the law. As long as they notify the subscriber of the takedown notices or accusations of infringement, they retain safe harbor status and cannot be held responsible for the actions of the users.... which is perfectly reasonable.

Can the phone company be held liable because someone phones in a bomb threat? Nope.

Well, whenever I see an SSID of "linksys" (or similar default), it's pretty much universally not locked.

I just tried with a T-mobile cell here in Tucson and it went right through. Didn't get a phone tree just a rang directly to a person. Crazy! Haven't seen that in years.

Similar to my experience.. I guess it depends on what type of complaints Cox is receiving... All I got was a simple e-mail telling me that I've been naughty and that I should turn off seeding/sharing to prevent further abuse tickets.

While running an open WiFi connection is not against the law or policy, it is your responsibility should shady traffic be originating from your connection. I've seen many instances where abuse has shut down customers for P2P traffic. In my experience, they usually send you a letter in the mail; sometimes Certified. In other instances, I've seen an immidiate shut down of the connection that is remedied quite rapidly when corporate is contacted at the 800 number. Phone routing aside, a simple phone-call, a slap on the hand and your connection would have been restored. At least that is my experience with it.

A company as large as Cox must protect itself from litigation too. Should they not act when copyright laws are broken by people utilizing their network, they could become liable too. In this economic climate, I doubt it's a smart business move to leave themselves open to such litigation. Just the way I see it.

Which is why I am considering bailing from AT&T (now also in the TV business: Uverse) for another DSL provider.

Still depends upon how much AT&T listens on the Last Mile, though. If Sonic has to provision the loop through an AT&T DSLAM I suspect I am still hosed (even if Sonic had their own ATM circuit to the CO).
