Running an open wifi can lead to others leeching to the point where you end up sucking too much bandwidth in a best case or you get a child porn ring or predator or terrorists in a worst case. I imagine there are circumstances that can get you kicked off without any warning.

I hear you on the encryption. I'm kicking myself for not having checked it more often to make sure it was still working. However, since they probably only tried to contact me by the cox email I never had, it wasn't that big of a deal.

You always have a cox email address, even if you don't "set it up". It is set up for you when you sign up for new service. I had to call months later to even find out what my account email address was so I could set it to forward any messages to the only account I use, my Gmail account.
