Unuseable between 5pm and 11:30pm

Xplorenet sucks. but it's my only option.

I can deal with the fact that I'm paying for a 5mbps service and getting 80kb/s MAX. It sucks, but whatever, it's tolerable.

The problem is, I only get those speeds between 11:30pm and 12:30pm - when I'm not using the internet anyway. Between lunch and 5pm, it slows to 30kb/s. Between 5pm, I get MAYBE 10kb/s until 11:30 when I get 80kb/s and everything works fine.

This is absolutely unacceptable. I play a lot games, these days, World of Warcraft. Between 5pm and 11:30pm it's completely unplayable. I can't do anything. Youtube? Forget it. Even browsing websites is near impossible.

This is ^$^#%ing unacceptable. If it was due to natural slowdown, okay, fine, but this is so mechanical that it is obviously them doing it with set schedules. If it was limiting me to something reasonable, like half speed, or even quarter speed, fine. But why the ^(*^ am I being limited to something that makes it impossible for me to do anything?

More to the point, is there anything I can do? If I call and bitch and them for purposely making my internet service unable to do ANYTHING at the only time I'd ever use it, every single day, will that have any effect? Is there ANYTHING I can do?

I doubt it.

More likely: either the link from the AP to the Internet is so oversubscribed that everyone on that tower is experiencing the same thing; or, there is something interfering with the radio signal at set times. Assuming you don't have any viruses or such on your computer sucking up all your bandwidth, sending out spam emails and the like.

Yes, there is. I'm going through this with them right now. And this appears to be a new policy -- so give it a try.

Call them, and tell them you're having consistent speed issues. Politely. They will email you a PDF document with some troubleshooting steps, and instructions for collecting speed test samples over a period of 24 hours. If your speed tests fall short of their benchmark (which is, I believe, 80% of your package speed, or 4 Mb/s in your case), the call gets escalated to an apparently new "speed team", who will work with you to determine root cause.

Will this resolve the issue? Only time will tell, but it appears that Xplornet is finally getting more serious about responding to customer complaints.

Cheers
Darren

An update:

Called in today and spoke to Level 1 tech about my speed test results (which sucked). She escalated me to Level 2 tech.

Spent about an hour on phone with Level 2 tech, discussing speeds, line-of-sight, distance, etc., including plotting out local AP's and my SM on Google Earth. The end result: under warranty, and at no cost to me, an installer will be trying a few things, namely: trying to connect to a closer 900 MHz tower in my area; and swapping my 900 MHz SM for a 5 GHz SM, and trying to connect with that. The connection with the highest speed wins.

Note that this is at no cost to me.

My suggestion: call them and ask. What can it hurt?

Another update:

Xplornet came out earlier this week. Did some testing, replaced my Canopy, and pointed me at a new 900 MHz AP. Now getting over 90% of my 3 Mb/s (see attached screen shot of results).

Cheers

I got xplornet 2 days ago, and after talking to level 2 techs they told me, that once you have used your allotted bandwidth they physically turn down the throtle on your speed. Learning this made me call the guys who sold me this junk and told them to come get there unit. Im not paying 80 dollars a month for slower than dailup speeds like 32kbps when im paying for 100mbps
