2WIRE MODEM DOES'T HAVE A GOOD WIRELESS RANGE

I have used my modem for some time now but not with wireless internet. My problems started when I got a ipod touch for the holidays but the 2Wire modem has such poor range that I cannot get a signal 15ft away from it. I have tried changing the power and the channel settings but nothing works.

If somene can help I would be glad!

You should be able to go here and change it. Look for the wireless settings, by default its only set to 4, you will be able to turn it up to 10.

»gateway.2wire.net/mdc

The password should be admin, if you haven't changed it.

I,ve already tried that and it doesn't seem to help anything.

By the way what's the best setting for the 2wire because it seems to work best on a power setting of one and channel one.

Ok, so the 2wire routers used to have a 400mW radio in them. They likely still do and that is roughly 1.5->2 times the power that most other residential wireless routers have. So if you have yours set at a power level of 1 then you are operating at approximately 40mW. If you want more power then you need to increase that setting.

Now, 802.11b/g operate in the 2.4GHz range. Channels 1 and 11 are on the fringes of this range. In the past (and probably still true), in order to remain in compliance with FCC regulations, your 2wire router will operate at a maximum of 40% power when on either of these 2 channels.

Since you have noted that you get fair performance on channel one, then you may want to try setting the channel at two with a power level of ten. Also make sure you don't have the router sitting on a subwoofer or near another device that creates a large electromagnetic field. That could interfere with the hardware in the radio.

Sadly, the 2.4GHz spectrum is very cluttered with devices. This means that in certain environments it can be difficult to attain a clean signal. The best countermeasure for those environments are directional antennae. Since the 2wire has internal antennae, you could only explore this option on the client side.

Good luck.

When you have trouble getting a signal 15' away, are you in the same room or a different level? I have no trouble getting a signal throughout old my 2 story home with modem in basement (steam heat, no metal air ducts). But my boss had trouble getting a signal in kitchen directly above modem in basement office in a new ranch home (maybe ducts or other metal blocking the signal).

But he already had a Netgear Powerline Wireless Range Extender that he used as router/AP when he had cable modem (since he got little/no signal from normal wireless router). I set the Netgear to wireless bridge mode (same security as 2Wire, different channel), with the wireless module on main floor. So he and his wife could roam upstairs/downstairs and all was well.

So it is possible that you or a neighbor has something that might interfere with (2.4 GHz) or block any wireless signal.
