U-verse or stay with AT&T Pro DSL & Dish network

A guy came to my house telling me that U-verse is now available in my neighborhood. It all sounded good, but I'm not sure if U-verse is better or just different. I told the guy I have 3000 down and he was telling me yes ,but that's kilo bits and what he has is megabytes down with the AT&T u-verse Elite. Now I see that the Elite U-verse & HSI Elite are the same price ($35 month)and speed! The Pro on both is also the same $30 month.

I'm happy with my internet, but was going to upgrade to HDTV with Dish before the guy came. Now not sure.

What are the pro's and con's for going with U-verse over the DSL pro?

What are the pro's and con's for U-verse over Dish network?

Is there a tool that will tell me how far from the node I am?

That is so awfully awfully awful. Of course it's 3000Kbps. Under Uverse it would also be 3000Kbps or 3Mbps. It's the same notation though in differing significant digits.

The difference would be one of stability and number of feeds. Uverse can take (or should be able to) high winds and less weather related issues. Though you'll only get at most 2 HD feeds or 4 feeds total.

And this scared the heck out of me when I was deciding wether to order U-Verse or not. Now that I have it the 2HD/2SD is just fine. I find the SD quality of UV to be so much better than my previous provider (Comcast) I set up most/all of my automatic recordings in SD and have never had an issue with using up all of the streams. That said, I am a two person home (empty nester) but fairly often more than one TV are in use. I've had UV for about 6 weeks now and both the wife and I really like it. The fact I'm saving $50/mo over Comcast doesn't hurt either.

Higher latency with Uverse Internet.
What are the pro's and con's for U-verse over Dish network?
I suppose I should know, but I don't. OTOH, we're sticking with DirecTV around here.

I've read that the maximum distance from the VRAD (node) that they will offer Uverse is 3,128 feet. So, if you can get it, you are close enough to get it.

You'll probable obtain a better HD picture with Dish. Uverse download is limited I believe to 10mps. Dish HD is 12mps.

Plus, if Dish works that's better than hoping Uverse does what a salesman says it will do.

The con is that you still have a dish on your roof.

Thank you for the info guys. I think I will pass on U-verse for now. Don't have any real weather issues here in Southern Cal. Don't need 18Mbps or 10Mbps, it would be nice, but not for 2X the cost. I read that people 3000ft from node only get one HD feed and one post here at DSLR suggest that 2500ft should maybe wait. The Dish is on the back part of my roof, so it's out of sight.

The only reason I thought about changing was fiber optics wow how cool is that. I remember reading a few years back about fiber optics and how much faster it would be...

Thanks again

AT&T and Comcast (and any company other than Verizon, with their FiOS) tends to get into marketing pissing matches over which network has more "fiber". But no cable company has deployed residential FTTP, that I know of, and only Verizon's FiOS is all FTTP.

AT&T does have a rare neighborhood, or three, with FTTP; but whether their FTTP areas all have Uverse, or not, I don't know. Uverse is, mostly, like the cable HFC plant: FTTN (Fiber To The Node).

If you got a door knocker I would guess you to be 1,900 feet as an experienced guess. Give it a try for 30 Days, then If you Don't Like it get Directv with Pro 3.0mbps DSL.

Please dump the Echostar Dish.

Re: U-verse or stay with AT&T Pro DSL & Dish network

Directv will not work for me as there is one channel that I must have and Directv doesn't have the channel.

May I ask you why you said?

Would like to add that I looked into adding HD to my Dish and did NOT feel much love from them for being a customer for over two years. See »[DISH] DISH'n It Up promotion?

Paul,

I am reading your thread and trying to see what you are looking for exactly.

DISH has never been that great to existing customers. I had to threaten to cancel in order to get a DVR after being with them for 3 years. Only at the point of cancellation did they do some thing.

If you don't need 10 or 18 meg internet no real difference for besides more upload. The 1.5, 3 and 6 U-Verse speeds offer 1 meg upload.

If you were thinking about U-Verse I would try it now while the STB's are $5 before it goes up to $7 in Feb.

From reading what you have stated, not sure you have a reason to switch.

Re: U-verse or stay with AT&T Pro DSL & Dish network

I didn't really think I had a reason to switch before, but posted this thread to get some feed back from DSLR users. After all this I was just going to stay with the setup I have so I called U-Verse to cancel the install. Didn't want them to do all the work if I would just cancel in 30 days.

Then I called Dish to upgrade to an HD box and found out as a existing customer I could buy the box out right for $549 or sign a two year commitment and pay $125. I asked the lady if I'm going to sign with them for two years then why would I need to pay more for the hardware than a new customer. She said that's the price for our existing customers. I wasn't asking for any of the other free stuff they are giving new customers just the hardware to be the same price $50 not $125. Even a new customer NOT signing a two year commitment still only pays $50 for the receiver and $99 activation fee. I didn't threaten to cancel or even get into it any more with her as I was getting mad and felt hanging up at this point and calling back at a latter time would be better....

Had a lot going on this last week, but been planning on calling U-Verse back and see about getting a new signup date. Or I could call Dish threaten to cancel like you did and see what they do.

Paul

Edit: Madtown The cost is about the same. The differance of how many TV's and if you have HD on all TV's.

Re: U-verse or stay with AT&T Pro DSL & Dish network

Personally I like uverse more then Dish or Comcast. Last year it was cheaper but ATT keeps raising prices for new subscribers. I just think Uverse offers more in the long run. For me it was cheaper compared to comcast. Comcast was my only HSI option.

I have Dish Network and AT&T Pro DSL too, I pay for the everything pack, and was wondering if it will save me money to switch over to U-verse once it's available here in Madera?
