[Home Networking] Earthlink DSL Disconnects from only one of my

I have the following setup:

Earthlink DSL
Apple Airport Extreme wireless router
Windows XP machine connected to router via ethernet cable
MacBook that connects via wireless
Old laptop with XP that connects via wireless
New laptop with Vista

All of my computers generally seem to stay connected just fine with no difficulties. But that new laptop with Vista tends to just disconnect every few hours for no apparent reason.

It used to do this for the first couple of months I had it. Then for another couple of months the problem seemed to go away. But now it's back. When I lose connection, I can hover over the networking icon in my system tray and it says "Local Only". When the connection is working properly it says "Local and Interenet". But when it's disconnected the MacBook is still connected just fine.

Generally I can solve the problem by accessing the Earthlink DSL modem admin panel (192.168.1.1) and going to Firmware Diagnostics and doing a reset of my ADSL line. This works about 75% of the time. Sometimes I have to reboot my computer once or twice and do the ADSL reset a couple of times before it finally works.

Any tips?

Sounds like a Vista problem rather that one with Earthlink, since your other machines stay connected.

Vista has some additional network security options that restrict access to unknown or potentially unsafe networks. It sounds like you need to tell Vista that your wireless network should be trusted as a 'home' network rather than a 'public' network.

I think you should request that a moderator move your post to the appropriate forum [Microsoft Help or Networking/Wireless Networking?]. This will improve the chance that your post will be read by someone who can tell you how to solve your problem.

That is a Vista issue from what you are posting. It would not be anything that Earthlink could do. EL can't select to control access on individual PCs on a Private LAN.

You might ask for Vista Help in the »Microsoft Help Forum.

This is so crazy. I am finding tons and tons of similar problems across the internet when I Google "Local Only". Not much in the way of solutions.

The one thing I've found is that if I reset my Earthlink DSL modem my problem always seems to be solved for awhile. Restarting the computer, or the Airport Extreme don't seem to solve the problem at all.

Just now I spent about 2 hours trying to find solutions online and by tweaking the settings on my computer, but no luck. Finally I gave up and restarted the Earthlink modem and now everything works.

I have 4 computers hooked to my network. Tonight the XBOX 360 and MacBook were connecting wirelessly just fine, but my Vista machine could not connect wirelessly and my XP machine was unable to connect via ethernet.
