Those pesky kids - ding dong ditch - update

OK - so it's been a few weeks since the last ding-dong-ditch (since my last post), and finally tonight they did it again.

I happened to have the motion sensor unplugged tonight (no, there's no way they knew that). So they ring and run, I get out the door quick and see them running down the street.

They have a lead on me, but I'm not far behind. They get a few blocks down and run through a slightly open fence in a backyard.

(I regret my next steps here)
So I go to the front door of the house and ring the bell, hoping to get their parents. Nobody answers, so I wait a few minutes.

I didn't have my cell with me so I go to the across the street neighbors house and use his to call the sheriff, and the neighbor tells me nobody lives at the house I was at, the people had recently moved out.

Arghh. So I go to the backyard, and of course they're not there. They must have jumped the fence to another house. So I try the left and right neighbors, turns out they don't have teenagers, etc, so I go to the next street over of the backyard they must have jumped into.

About that time the sherrif pulls up, he goes with me to the house, but those people don't have teens either.

So they got away again, but I am getting closer.

Two other neighbor friends come out and we talk, drive around the block a few times just in case, no luck.

A lot of people in the neighborhood are sick of it too, it's not just me. My direct neighbor is super-pissed, more than me. For me really now it's just the principle of the thing to catch these kids.

We'll get 'em eventually.

In the last house I lived in, the door bell would ring at least once a week. Turned out that the door bell was sticking.(Please don't disect this...) Drove the dogs nuts. replaced the switch, no more false alarms.

Why would you call the cops? Is ringing a doorbell illegal?

What a wonderful door bell anecdote! Too bad it's completely unrelated to the thread.
If he had talked about how he was in a car accident and one of his tires flew off would you tell us about the time you got a flat tire and had to change it?

Depends upon the context, and in this case it's harassment.

OP is definitely overreacting though, and that's what they want. Those kids are trying to get a funny reaction, they want you to run outside chasing them, they want to see you open the door and stomp around like an angry gorilla. And you're giving them the pleasure.

Want to know how to get them to stop? Don't answer your door unless someone rings more than once or you are expecting someone. They will only ring once and run, anyone else will try the bell a second time. When you don't answer they will stop doing it.

Totally. Lack of reaction on your part = lack of satisfaction on theirs.

Sounds like somebody needs to watch Bad Day at Black Rock. Spencer Tracy's character in that film was one unflappable guy:

Reno Smith: "I believe a man is as big as what'll make him mad. Nobody around here seems big enough to get you mad."

I have to ask: why is it you don't have one of your neighbors mount a video camera in a window that faces your house?

Why not put a video camera in his window? It's happening to his neighbors as well. Also, I'd wager after this latest brush with the ding dong ditch sheriff, they may lay low for a few months at least.

I'd like to see the kids lay low, too, if only so the OP could get a bit of peace and quiet for a change.

Unfortunately for him, we're talking about kids here. And for kids, an adrenaline rush like the one they no doubt got while being chased down the street by the OP is a powerful motivator for them to keep on doing what they're doing.

Along the same lines as the video camera: can the OP install a peephole in his door? Naughty children aside, a peephole also allows you to determine if salesholes, etc., are also darkening your door, so it's not a bad idea regardless.

Just put out a camera with IR illumination (or a light with motion sensor and a regular camera) have it hooked up to a PC and keep recording 24x7. if they do it again, even if you can't catch them, you'll still have a video.
