You're right. They are idiots. There was never a free speech issue because government cannot legally censor other Internet services that people can choose to pay for.

Just make them use Open DNS

and say if you don't want your kid to see this or that create an open DNS account and control it

(ie set the DHCP server to give out the DNS servers used by open DNS)

Provided the ISP isn't using some other filtering method. For example, if an ISP decides to null route unwanted sites by IP address, it won't make a difference if you use OpenDNS.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a "free to me" wireless option which is not paid for by taxpayers.

I'm not saying as an alternitive to ISP DNS just make Open DNS be ISP DNS for the free internet

I figure its good enough and easily circumvented by anyone that knows so it would just be a "here you go be happy and don't yell at us when your kid gets around it" type thing

I figure it would end up cleaning the internet for 75-90% of people and would basicly be free to the ISP and then if someone wants a faster service then they pay and get moved over to a differant DHCP server that issues a normal DNS server address in its leases
