Re: Finally!! A class action against Hughes Net....

Some ISP 'speed tests' are actually be on the ISP's server and only shows the connection speed between you and the server and 'Not' the Internet. But you bought a connection to get on the World Wide Internet.

For Xplornet in Canada, The Xplornet speed test shows good on the Anikast speed test site during PrimeTime, but crap on any other speed test site during PrimeTime.

Your speeds are not too bad for your package. But maybe someone else could elaborate, why adding a second Idle computer causes a speed drop.
And are you on Spaceway3 KA band? HN9000 modem.. Or KU and the HN7000.

HughesNet is very very clear that you're paying for UP TO 1000/200. And keep in mind that this is shared bandwidth. That means a set amount of "speed" is divided among everybody assigned to any given gateway server. Using round numbers, let's say a gateway server has a max of 125MB/s (1000 mbps) available to share. Then say 1000 people are accessing that server at the same time, each getting 125KB/s (1000 kbps). But make that 2000 accessing simultaneously, and each gets only 62.5KB/s (500 kbps). It's called over-subscription, and they all do it.

Besides, those speeds you cite would actually make some folks jealous. So I don't think you really have much to complain about.

Most speed test servers are set up to measure terrestrial broadband modem speeds. But satellite modems typically use much more complicated compression algorithms than terrestrial modems. As such, many speed test sites provide less than accurate measurements of satellite modem speeds. And others may use a simple throughput-over-time calculation that cannot cope with the latency that is inherent to satellite connections.

That's why you should stick with the HughesNet speed test site. Besides, their tech support won't accept speed test results from any sites other than their own anyway. So it pays to keep an online record of your speed test results right on THEIR speed test server.

Idle computers on your network should not affect modem throughput or speed test results. But if some automatic update or email check happens while you're performing a speed test with another computer, it will in fact affect the test results. But after being a WB customer, you should realize that satellite connection speeds can and do vary wildly between even back to back tests. So I'd say you were getting a load of crap from that particular tech.
