Windows 7 beta has leaked!

quote:
]Beta testers and some media outlets have apparently had access to Windows 7 for some time now, but the recent beta release of Microsofts next generation operating system has been leaked onto BitTorrent sites like The Pirate Bay.

The New Zealand Morning Herald reported on the story recently. From the report:

A few leaked copies of the early 'alpha' build did the P2P rounds in December.

And now the 'Build 7000' version of the new system has found its way onto the file sharing network BitTorrent, making it available for anyone to download.

The torrent is a disk image of the 32-bit version of the system, and underground site Pirate Bay is listing nearly 2000 'seeder' versions of the 2.44GB download.

Windows bloggers say that the pirated build is the version that will be issued in January as Windows 7 Beta.

This latest leak seems to follow the standard tradition of how a Windows operating system is distributed (albeit, without authorization no doubt). An early version of the release is posted, then Beta testers test the new operating system, then a final version is released where some users are able to tell what has been stripped out. It's happen for vista back when it was called Longhorn and it appears to be happening with the latest version of Windows.

Anyone who finds this to be news should really get out more !

I'm waiting for it to ripen up a bit before I waste an hour downloading it.

Runs pretty well I must say. See attached image

I'll definitely join the legit beta program once they open it up. It's good to give it a test run, it's very stable as is right now.

I guess I'm more concerned with software compatibility than hardware at this point. I'll be curious to see if you run into any compatibility problems after you've run it a week or so.

I've only installed Firefox and VLC right now, no troubles with them.

I'll install MS Office 07 and 03 today at some point adn report back on how they go. I also have to figure out filesharing between my computers. It's a bit different than Vista I think.

It's just, BETA JUNK, now so why should anyone care?
Except some hackers wanting an early start on cracking it's security codes.

I beta tested Vista and although there were a few things in the beta that they dropped that I liked, I felt a lot more comfortable with it when I started using the release candidate. Vista runs very good on my machine and the beta ran just as well with no problems either.

Paul Thurrott is reporting in his write up that there are areas of instability and a good deal of menu inconsistency in the most current Windows 7 beta build, mainly with IE8 and Word 2007. I also note IE8 beta instability on XP. I haven't downloaded Windows 7 yet.

Yeah, I'm reading his writeup right now. Interesting note about Word 07 freezing randomly twice. I'll have to see if I can replicate it, as well as see if that problem exists with Office 03.

Burn iso files directly in OS!
One very little but nifty thing I found, not sure if it's in Vista..

See attached image.

Edit: Second nifty feature: if you set your desktop to a theme, the wallpaper automatically rotates between a set of images related to your theme.

It's not. I've always used ISO Recorder for those functions: »isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/Vista.htm. It hooks into the built-in burning software and is simply nothing more than an interface but it does what it says and looks similar to what Microsoft has created there. I should also point out Microsoft themselves even suggested in a KB article, ISO Recorder for Vista and XP users that don't want to pay for Nero or similar.

Edit: Oooo automatically changing wallpaper, that's something else I've wanted.

Think I should do a write up on Windows 7 here on BBR?

Another nifty little thing: bottom right corner, click the little rectangular bar and it goes to the desktop.

There are definitely UI inconsistencies, looks like a mash of windows 7 and vista together. Paint makes good use of the ribbon interface though.

Comcast of NJ II sucks. Period.
25 HD channels compared to the average 32 or so.

Downloadable themes finally! Not like XP where you had to hack the uxtheme file.

Ribbon interface in paint? Ugh well I guess it's inevitable. I've yet to find everything that's "hidden" in Office and now they're putting it in the other apps? Say, did you try office 03 yet? I've never tried it on Vista but I've heard it won't install.

I have Office 03 on my one Vista install. I'm actually about to go on an expedition and look for my Office 03 disc.

Edit: installing office 03 as we speak.

edit2: working great so far.

I wounder why only 32 bit versions get leaked. There hasn't been a "leaked" 64 bit version for some time.

I am not too excited about Windows 7

It is nothing more than a stripped down vista with a few interface tweaks and support for more processor cores....

what is there to get excited about? its Windows NT 6.1...the same exact build as Vista SP1

Im sure once it goes final they will change the build to NT 6.2 or something...but its nothing more than Vista SP2 with very minor changes...can't believe they are going to charge folks for this.

where is the creativity and vison that was Microsoft?

Windows 2000 to Windows XP there was some noticeable changes....98 to 2000 was very noticeable...XP to vista...was just bad...3d interface and slow...Even if Windows 7 is a bit faster, which i doubt it will be, but if it is, is it worth paying for that?

where is WinFS

where is hot-patching?(patching that doesn't require a reboot everytime i install windows updates)

Why are we still using NTFS that is old as dirt....why can Linux and others have a non-fragmenting filesystem and windows can't? ext4 is on the horizon that is going to be "it"

why cna't Microsoft improve the file system

I am asking legitmate questions as a customer, they are failing to deliver on their promises....

give me a few reason I should hand over my hard earned money for Windows 7?

Wow me

Show me something new and innovative

Yup, it's on Mininova, just did an advanced search, the ISO's are out there, though there's no controlling so-leaks, such as this.

On a fresh install of Windows 7 expect about 30 processes running. Maybe a little more.

I have firefox running and I only have 34 processes running. Looks very slimmed down and optimized...and this is Windows 7 Ultimate!
