Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable service in New York

Mystro is horrible. An Embarrassment. An epic disaster.

It is completely baffling to me why we should lose functionality - and be expected to pay the same price.

Not only are features missing, but I now have troubles with the box. It has inexplicably rebooted twice since the software 'upgrade'. Even while watching a program live, it stutters and freezes.

It makes one long for the days of analog TV and rabbit ears. At least that worked....

Please PM me when the channel you were watching along with the serial number of your box. Also, what type of box is it? Is this happening on only 1 channel?

It was channel 711. I have the SA 8300HD. It happened both times and it happened when it was scheduled to record two hd programs. The other did record.
Beyond bizarre, as I mentioned before, one hd movie (finding nemo on the new Disney XD channel) continues to crash my box. I deleted it.
I will get the serial number to shortly. I dont feel like going behind the box.

To add insult to injury, I lugged my box to Queens Center Mall office. No Samsung boxes at all. May not get them for weeks the person said. Walked out.

That's because the new Samsungs are having problems with Video On Demand where it doesn't work at all and they're waiting until its fixed to give them out.

Hmm... The boxes in our office works fine with VOD.

Well, I mean the newer boxes newer than the ones you have. They stopped using all Samsung boxes and will use the newest when they're fixed.

I hate Mystro. One problem I have not seen mentioned is loss of the ability to turn the freakin' display off when the box is off.
I have enough green lights in the bedroom with out that one. With Passport I had the option of turning the display off when the box is off. Now it's either No Display at all or Clock Always, Channel Always or Channel while tuning.
It may seem trivial to some but I liked it and am POd that they took it away.

Does anyone else have issues with fox hd while watching sports. The last few Saturday baseball games and now with the football games today most camera angles, not all, are choppy, and some angles appear fuzzy and almost like they are slightly in slo mo. Every other channel i have tried looks perfect, and i just want to know if its a TWC problem or a Fox prob.

I completely agree--the Mystro software sucks! I think we should start a petition to demand a discount (say 25% less) on all non-programming fees we pay to Time Warner, i.e. the cable box, the remote, the DVR service, etc. We're getting less capabilities in the "upgrade," so we should pay less accordingly. Here's is just short list of things I cannot stand in the "uprgrade:"

> Close caption does NOT work right. Many texts are lost.
> DVR marks recorded programs for deletion even though there's still plenty of memory left.
> I'm unable to reorder recorded programs in the order I'd like to have them deleted.
> When rewinding, the box jumps forward by a few seconds. This did not happen with the old software, but it does now, which is hugely inconvenient.
> The electronic TV guide only shows 1.5 hour of what's coming up. It used to be at least 2 hours.
> In the TV guide, when movie descriptions are shown, it doesn't show the director name or country of origin anymore. Also, the # of stars for the rating is now listed at the end, which means one would need to scroll to find if a movie is worth watching
> in the TV guide, one cannot find shows by keyword anymore
> The new software does not allow setting a precise start and end time for recording. One has to record the whole show or not at all.
> In the DVR mode, when fast forwarding or rewinding, the display does NOT indicate how many minutes you have moved. The visual gauge is not an adequate guide for where you are in the program.
> Now, a single touch on the A button erases a recorded program. It used to take 2 hits, which is a safer way to confirm deletion.

NYC is using an outdated version of MDN which will end up getting upgraded someday.

Keyword search I know they'll add that shortly. I think its ok but my division always gets the latest version since we're a test market for new software. Mystro is actually called Navigator. If you complain to them about Navigator they sometimes will report it to the developers. It's still not perfect but I've never experienced a MDN DVR only it's OCAP cousin written in Java. The ones for the non C and Samsung boxes are written in C.

This has been an ongoing issue (nationwide and not just TWC I believe) for a month or so now. There's a thread on the avsforum if you want to read further on it. I was switching between ota and twc. OTA did not have the problem.

About the NYC has an older version, I guess that's a good thing as some of those things I haven't lost such as scheduling by time.

SDV is coming to NYC. TWC singed a deal with BigBand to provide SDV solutions though other divisions use Cisco's SDV solution. SDV is great when it works but if it doesn't then it can be an issue. If it doesn't work then it will say Channel Not available. It will supposedly help them get more channels though NYC is large and diverse which means that all channels are being watched. We'll see how this will pan out in the future.

Leggatt,

One thing you can do when rewinding is the press the pause button when you see the spot you want to rewind to. If you hit play, it will not forward, it will play from that point.

Also, there are far more problems that need to be fixed other than keyword search.

Beyond the shortness of the descriptions of the guide, when recorded, it doesn't even record the description in the guide. It gets cut off.
And while you can see the 7th forwarded day (today is wednes and see next tuesday schedule), the 7th day of programming will not show up on scheduled shows to record (despite you having it scheduled to record) or it will not show up in search by title.

The Hudson Valley area is getting SDV on certain channels. Tuning resolvers will be handed out for customers with CableCard PC's, Moxi units, and Tivo Series3/HD/HDXL customers.

Re: Issues with Time Warner Cable Mystro 7/14 Queens Roll-out

I'm a victim of TWC's July 14, 2009 Queen's DVR Conversion to Mystro from SARA.

Since then I've experienced outages, multiple reboots/day, major loss of guide functionality, incorrect recording, etc. I'm paying almost $100/month for utility grade service and want to be compensated for the poor service and lost recordings. I'm waiting for the Samsung 3090 320gb box, software fixes, support for the external drive. In addition, my Coop (300+customers) is meeting with Verizon about switching enmasse to FIOS.

I use my DVR for time shifting and archiving shows for historical purposes so the guide and recording is very important. Mystro is a major downgrade in reliability, functionality, and usability from the SARA software. Its also slower, uses more more resources (JAVA versus C), has poor human factors, takes more time to setup recordings, and fails very often.

My SA8200 hung during the conversion process for 16 hours, I had no cable service for days; the box had to be replaced, my external hard drive was trashed. They replaced the DVR and said my 320gb Western Digital external hard drive was CPE and not supported. I bought a 1 TB Seagate drive which worked for almost 2 months; after a reboot I got a message that I needed to reformat the drive in order to use it with Mystro.

They said the 8200 was too slow and didn't have enough memory to run Mystro well. I'm waiting for 320gb Samsung 3090. In the mean-time I such not be charged for services and want additional credit for the lost recordings.

That box uses C. Only the HDC and Samsung boxes use Java based program. Anybody who thinks Navigator is written in Java is entirely misinformed.
