| Mobile Me alternative?
So my mobile me subscription has expired and i'm trying to figure out if its really worth paying $100+ for another year of it. I only really use the syncing between my Desktop and Laptop for bookmarks and keychains. My address book and calendar go through my google apps for your domain account. Anyone know of a cheaper or free alternative that will automatically sync my bookmarks and keychains? |

| I use delicious for syncing bookmarks. For keychains you could check out 1Password. I think they have a beta service for syncing keychains and backing them up to a remote server. The program costs money, but the service is free I believe (for now, if you get in the beta). You could also look at using Dropbox for some of the mobileme functionality (syncing files). You might be able to set something up where you could store your keychain files in a Dropbox folder and let it sync between the computers. |

| I don't know it would do bookmarks very well. Check »delicious.com/ and look at the add-ons for Firefox or Delicious Safari for Safari. You can also use bookmarklets for either browser.
For password syncing using 1Password and Dropbox check this: »webworkerdaily.com/2008/09/29/1p···ox-sync/ |

| reply to joeybee For bookmarks, I use Foxmarks with Firefix as I do not use Safari. For keychain, I don't mind logging back into resources if I set-up and use a new Mac. Not a huge deal to me.
Good suggestions on 1Password and Dropbox, have to check them out. -- Qwest DSL - 1.5 MB/ 896 kbps & 2.4 Ghz Wireless | Mac mini 2.0 GHz - Apple TV - Macbook Pro (newest one) - MacBook Black/10.5.5 Leopard/2.2 GHz/4.OGB Ram | Blackberry Curve 8310 (Red) |

| I think you're probably right about Opera with the bookmarks and keychain. But then the only browser you can use is Opera. If you use delicious I think there are extensions for Safari, Opera, Firefox, and a couple other browers I'm sure.
I've run into at least a few sites that won't work in Opera. Same goes for Firefox and Safari too though, seems that some sites designed for IE will work in Opera just fine, but not the other two. No example off the top of my head, so its not enough sites to make it a big enough deal....
Opera is a great browser. If 1Password would work with it I'd probably use it. |

| reply to joeybee If you install 1Password it will grab all of the passwords from the 1Password keychain. I think the default is so when you press Command + \ it pops up the 1Password dialog. If there is only 1 password saved for that particular site/form, it will pre-fill it for you. If multiple passwords are saved it gives you a little context menu where you can select the password you want to use. You can also save more than passwords--stuff like credit cards, pre-filled user information (name/adddress/phone/etc).
Each time I go to a new site 1Password asks if I want to save the password. On many sites, if I update the password it even prompts if I want to update the old password in 1Password. As far as the browser extension goes, 1Password is pretty transparent in Safari. They have a demo download available, you should give it a try (restart Safari after install).
1Password is one piece of software tahts been well worth the money I spent on it. |
