Are you broadcasting your SSID.
If you are trying to hide your SSID [leaving that field blank] in a misguided attempt at security then you may have problems.
Your SSID is broadcast whether you like it or not, trying to hide it can only cause you and your neighbors problems and does not provide any security.
If it is Broadcast your Mac should see it.

Thanks for the suggestion.
Just checked and indeed the SSID was not enabled.

Unfortunately, the MacBook is longer at hand, so will have to test at a later date.
