| Maximum Broadband Speed
Hi, I get my broadband from Orange and have been a customer since the Freeserve days. Thanks to this, my service isn't a standard one that is offered by Orange, and is instead a continuation of the original Freeserve terms.
Anyway, enough about that. Recently I was shopping around for broadband prices to make sure I was getting a decent deal relative to what other companies have to offer, and it turns out I am - at least in theory.
The service I'm subscribed to is worded as "fastest service available, uncapped", which I assume *should* equate to their maximum 8 meg offering. However, after logging on to my customer account for the first time in several years I noticed a footnote reading something along the lines of "We have measured your line, and deduced the maximum service your line can offer is 2 meg."
This is in stark contrast to the test I had taken earlier that day on BT's site, which told me that my line was capable of an estimated 6.5, so I took an online speed test, and sure enough, my connection topped out at 1993kbps, which for me is suspiciously close to the "maximum" that Orange claim they can offer.
Now (finally), the question: Do you think Orange (or Freeserve) have throttled my connection speed from the initial assessment made of my line, which was many years back, while having me pay for a service that didn't reassess the increase in capacity of my line?
If so, ever since my line's ability has increased beyond 2 megs, they've been charging me for a top class service, while only serving me a basic one in terms of connection speed.
How reliable is BT's line speed check? - because there's a BIG difference between what BT claim they can offer and what Orange are giving me (and their initial assessment). What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance,

| I wrote the letter today inquiring about what may or may not be going on, and for clarification on several issues. When(ever) I get a response I'll post the outcome here to satisfy anyone's curiosity.
