Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

I saw others ask how to delete their ISP review for an ISP they're no longer with but that's not what I want to do. Once again, some user named "system" asked me to review my ISP... In the past, I always ignored this person but today I decided to appease them.

What do I say about an ISP I haven't had service with in 2+ years ? Or an ISP I canceled service with 5 years ago ?

Why not add a check-box for "I am no longer with this ISP (so stop bugging me about it)" ? Maybe this belong in the feature request forum ?

Re: Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

Hi -- sorry for the pester... but it should not happen very often. SYSTEM - is our server just waving a flag to lodge a review.

We don't delete old reviews because we feel even if you are no longer with the ISP your review is still helpful to others considering the service.

Will check on adding a box that says " please for the love of java stop pestering me"

In the meantime - it should only happen rarely -- please just smile and wave at the server who is working in the cold dark basement desperate to be noticed

Sorry, I know who "system" is... just trying to be newbie-ish, I guess. I know why you don't want to delete old reviews and I certainly agree.

Again, the point is, how do you review an ISP you're no longer with ?

Re: Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

I have to go back and look at how the flag gets triggered. When I get it -- I think it says " hey we don't have a review from you ...would you like to review ..." -- OR "its been awhile ... do you wish to UPDATE your ISP review"... based on whether you have previously lodged a review or not.

I have not ... so I get the "hey be brave try it ..." prompt.

Again though ...my point -- just ignore for now -- it comes up rarely -- and it gives our server in the basement some purpose

Hall, I have a couple questions.

Is there a newer review of yours on the site than the one for the provider for whom you don't have service?
Does the system bug you for updates of that review also?

Thanks.

Re: Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

Here's the relevant part of the IM:

So, it has been a while now, we were all wondering if you had an update? or perhaps any other new services to review?

Links to your previous review(s) are listed below. You will find an update button in them:
»Review of AT&T Midwest by Hall
»Review of Earthlink Cable Modem Service by Hall
»Review of EarthLink by Hall
I still have service with "AT&T Midwest" but the system really doesn't "know" that. As far as it's concerned, I still have service with the other two also. I only see an "updated" date so I can't really tell which is the newest, just the most recently updated. I think it should have an original review date and maybe "Last updated" or something.

To be honest, I've been getting these IMs for probably 1-2 years and I just ignore 'em. When I got the one today (or yesterday), it just struck me that maybe this system needs this option. I can understand keeping your current ISP and it's review up-to-date, but the other ones, are "closed" (for 99% of people, I'd say).

Re: Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

The query says:

"So, it has been a while now, we were all wondering if you had an update? or perhaps any other new services to review?"

It is not insisting per se that you have anything new to say on an old review - it is a kind of catch all. A ... in case you did not know and you are interested you could update or perhaps you have a new ISP and you want to say something. A prompter.

Since I do not have a review I get that hey how about a review.

One of the key foundations of this site is consumer advocacy and our review system. So we do like to keep things updated where appropriate. But by no means are you obligated in any way.

I can see where it might be annoying ... but I do hope not too much so. Perhaps we can look to add a tick box that says please don't ask me to update or lodge a review.

Re: Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

I don't think you get my point. I completely understand the value of the reviews and don't want to take them away or discourage users not to submit them. I also don't want the ability/option to delete reviews. As it is, it's asking me -- I realize I can ignore it and it's not "insisting" -- to update ALL of my reviews. For most people, only the last one is likely current for them.

Think of it this way: You fill out a review of a car (let's say it's a Honda Accord) you own. A few years later, you sell that car, get a new one (an Acura something...), and complete a new review. Shortly after, that system asks you for an update on the Accord. What do you put ? Sure, you could say "I sold that car and no longer have it". A year later it wants another update. What will you put this time ?

Re: Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

I do think I understand (but I will drink some more coffee just in case I am not getting it) ... as I said in previous post - they system does not KNOW you don't have the service - its a catch all -- perhaps a flaw if you will.

Sometimes members do have multiple reviews for more than one ISP and they could be current -- ie one for home and one for office. And member sometimes want to add something. Or a member might not know they can lodge more than one review so the prompt shows them they can add a new review.

In your case I get that you do NOT have those services previously reviewed. We don't delete because of the value of what you had to say -- the issue becomes as you have said " I don't have anything to say cause ... I don't have the service" ...but I am saying ... its only a prompt -- if it is applicable use it ... and if it is not applicable do nothing. In your case ... its not applicable ...unless you a) have a new ISP ... or b) do have something new to say on your last review -- as in " all is still great -- they lowered my cost" or "all is still great except they raised my rates" etc.

Again ... as said ... it is annoying if you don't have anything to add - but it is a catch all prompt - a general flag - it is not reading your exact situation - "system" just sees that you have reviewed. period. And then sends out a note saying "hey ... wanna update ... or hey ... wanna lodge a new review"?

I don't want to sound argumentative in the least - only hoping to explain... and appreciate that the bump to review could stand a little improvement.

Re: Flag an ISP review as "no longer with..." or "obsolete"

system does not KNOW you don't have the service
I think Hall See Profile was suggesting a switch that would allow a reviewer to tell the system that they no long have service.

And have the review link stay on the user page,
but if no longer with the company, add a red X or something.
