Windows 7 and MagicJack

I am using the files dated 7/21/2008. I wonder if anyone has gotten Magic Jack to work with Windows 7?

thanks

Windows 7 is not likely to be available until late 2009 at the earliest. [EDIT] looks like beta version can be downloaded by the public starting today...

I just downloaded and installed Windows 7 in a VM. When you plug in the MJ, it prompts you to run magicJack.exe, like Vista, but when you do, you only get the popup image "You must plug magicJack into USB" (or words to that effect).

I am downloading the Beta version of Windows Seven now. I emailed the inventor of Magic Jack about Windows Seven compatibility and am hoping for an email response soon. I will post again to report my findings. Wish me luck on my expedition.
Cheers.

Ok I received an email reply and I must say I it did not answer my question.
Here is what I received:

Hi Ann,

I am Roderick and was asked by Dan to address and help out with your issue.

Here are the following REQUIREMENTS of magicJack:

1. Any computer with Windows XP or Vista operating system; (Mac/Apple will be available any day.)

2. One of the following: broadband, high-speed internet, cable internet, DSL, WiFi or WiMax.

3. Your present corded or cordless telephone.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Roderick

Needless to say I emailed him back asking the same question again. Perhaps he will actually read the question this time. I currently have 10% of the Windows Seven ISO image so far, so it may be tomorrow before I can install it and test the different configurations of Magic Jack on it. If I get an answer from my email and it is worth posting I will post it here.

Ok I received an email from another technician and here is what I have been told:

Hi Ann,

Our engineers are still working on it. We will be posting more detailed updates on our website in the months to come. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Marvin

I find this very promising as we may be able to use Magic Jack in Windows Seven very soon. They will say in the months to come obviously because if they say in a few weeks or so many will be upset if it doesn't happen. I am still going to test it out on my desktop to see if there is a way to work around Windows Seven to get it to work properly. I am thinking a last resort in getting it to work in Windows Seven is possibly installing Windows XP via Virtual Machine.
It is definitely worth a try.
Til later,
Ann

I downloaded the beta yesterday.

When I get a spare hard drive to install it, I'll play around with MJ and see if I get anywhere [probably two weeks or so].

you cannot expect MJ to work right off the bat in Windows 7. Windows 7 is only a beta and the MagicJack folks certainly should not be expected to immediately provide a way that we can get MJ to work. And Windows 7 should not be on anyone's computer yet as their main and only operating system. It is a beta. Anything is liable to happen. I am dual booting my machine at the present time. Just got the 64bit Windows 7 Ultimate installed about an hour ago.

Absolutely. It's ridiculous to think that it would. MJ will get around to it when 7 is out of beta. Too many changes until then.

A little patience everyone.

Mac has been supported for months at least. It would be nice if they could at least keep their canned emails up to date.

I agree it's ridiculous to expect MJ to work on Windows 7, but we also have to remember that 7 is based off of Vista and really shouldn't be that hard to figure out what is keeping it from running on 7. Its a simple USB device... I say try and come up with ideas to trouble shoot instead of bashing someone for asking if anyone got it to work yet. That's what forums are for! To help one another figure things out.

Good luck to the MJ user trying to get it to work on 7. Wish I had a resolution for you, but I don't. Maybe try running it as a service?

MJ does a lot of processing that isn't necessary just to run VOIP. Download and run "procmon" with a filter for "magicjackloader.exe" to see what I mean.

You can eliminate a lot of that needless processing (and the potential for a Windows 7 change to affect something) by following the Wiki FAQ for running without the Splash screen. This bypasses magicjackloader.exe. It executes magicjack.exe directly. That might not fix it. But, it would eliminate *a lot* of stupid processing. You can still run Procmon on an XP system and Windows 7 to get an idea what it's doing when it fails.

I set up the Windows 7 beta in VirtualBox last night. I'll have to see if I can get USB working in the VM. Otherwise it'll have to wait until I can get another hard drive.

When I get to the point where I can test MJ under Win 7, the first thing I'll do is run magicjack.exe in Windows Vista [or XP] compatibilty mode. That way, anything that depends on a version string or similar value to run won't raise an error flag [the only explanation I can think of as to why it won't run in Win 2000].

-----

EDIT 1/13 6:30PM ET: I have USB working with the VM, but audio quality is lousy [in general] with the VM. I'm not going to test MJ until I can install Windows 7 on a dedicated hard drive [maybe Friday].

FYI: A report of getting MJ to work with Win7. BTW: It involves what I said, bypassing the normal "magicjackloader.exe" process.

VirtualBox has a bug which causes it to use close to 100% CPU when the guest has access to the USB devices. That might be the cause.

I am happy to say someone beat me to the solution! Virtually everything you need to know is here: »www.magicjacksupport.com/post295···ml#29556 as posted earlier. If you get confused about the instructions post a message here and someone will help you. I had a little trouble understanding the directions on how to change the target of the shortcut, but finally got it. I seriously doubt I will be going back to Vista. I am so looking forward to the release date of Windows 7.

If MJ pushes another "Lucky You" upgrade, you might have to go back to Visduh for the working install, and follow the instructions again to get it moved to 7.
