Is it Modem going bad, AT&T tapping line or ex UVERSE

hello all,,Hope you & your loved ones nothing but the very best of health & happiness in the new year.

have a Speed Stream 5100B modem & a 2Wire 2701HG-B Gateway router,
Multiple problems on & off ever since let Uverse install/uninstall their equipment last April for a week.

this just started happening 2 days ago using the 5100B modem,1st time ever saw this

computer /modem off yellow cord from computer to back of modem disconnected,(only phone line & power cord hooked up to modem, ok?

all of a sudden ALL modem lights,(red power light,& 4 green lights light up) stay on for 2-3 seconds then shut off
=========================================================
1,,IS this because maybe modem is going bad,? (works ok when turned on & using it online)
or
2,Is this from AT&T / U verse maybe tapping the line?

other problem is with phone (like a new call coming in) lights up for 2-3 seconds all of a sudden.

Thanks for the help, Jazzy

using router now for a cple of days

Yeah, that's it. AT&T is tapping the line, shooting power through the phone line to flip the physical switch to make the lights on the modem turn on RIGHT as you are watching it.

And of course U-Verse has to do with it somehow, because those people have really nothing else to do. Look at them, all driving around in their brand new F-150s, putting stickers on boxes and remotes, saying they like the big ones instead.

OR

Could it be that the physical switch was pushed in just a little to make it come on?

No, you're right. It has to be AT&T. I would suggest unplugging the phone cable, the power cable, and the NID just in case. Don't forget to disconnect your cable TV drop too, they can get you that way even though they are another company.

OK for clafication are you saying that when you have a incoming phone call you will lose dsl sync for a few making the green light flash red ??
Do you here any static/clicking on the phone while in use??

In Jazzy's past posts he says he unplugs the modem from the computer every night to prevent outsiders from getting into his computer. He also switches between modems to access a health chat room.

He may have worn the connection out with all the plugging and unplugging.

OK is the modem Switch on the back in the on postion thus the lights are on then all of a sudden when you see it it may appear that the modem reboots causing the lights to start flashing. perhaps it is loosing sync and this is causeing the lights to flicker??

If so this could possably be a high-open or a short on the line or a spike in voltage / milliamps causing the modem to reboot and will eventually fry any device directly connected to the phone line IE fax machines dsl modems or telephones.

IT is possable that a loose or coreoded connection anywhere could cause this as well. Possably in the nid it self or in the Splice box on the pole or in the Sac box depending on whether jazzy has a areil drop or a underground drop.
If my hypothosis is correct it will take a Line tech to fix this.

Jazzy should not have to be switching from one modem to the next to access this health chatroom. period it should just work. So there has to be a glitch with it somewhere.
I would try to find this glitch but I have no Att dsl at this moment.

Jazzy switches modems so he can keep one of them "disease- free" at all times.

Koma - Do you suppose you have no DSL because you are also on the AT&T "hitlist"?

Ok i would suggest that you will need to get the voltage at the outlet that the modem is pluged into checked to be sure there is not any overvoltage on that circuit.

It is possable that there is a loose connection inside the modem itself possably in the switch itself or at one of the solder joints and maybe some vibration of sorts is making it come incontact. As i do not think that this modem has a wake on lan option in it. I have never taken one apart.

the reason router/modem is switched is because on a medical chat site ROUTER will not work, so easier to switchto 5100 B to allow into chat room

=========================================================
For the modem lights to come on, there has to be power applied to the modem.

I have a SpeedStream 4100, and the power switch feels flimsy. I've only used it, maybe, a dozen times, or two, since I first put the modem into operation in August, 2005. I generally leave the modem powered up, and the router, as well. Not worried about external (from the Internet) connections, as I use the router to control those.

If you have used that switch on a daily basis, I can see the possibility of it failing, and allowing the modem to power up, briefly; enough to cause the symptoms you are seeing. If your modem is lighting up on incoming calls, some other flakiness with the modem.

My bet is on a failing modem.

P.S. Constantly unplugging the CAT 5e cable between the modem and computer is also creating a point of failure; as already mentioned by 34702533 See Profile. Get yourself a router, and connect it between the modem and the computer. Most routers don't have a power switch, and you would have to kill power by pulling the cable from the power socket on the device. I've done that, rarely, as well. But I think that the power plug on a router is the most robust cable connection you have to manipulate; and, if you must power something down, that would be least likely to cause disruption over time.

However, to repeat, I leave my modem, and my router, on 24/7. The worst you can say about that is that it isn't "green".

The SS5100b is very similar to the SS4100 (the 5100b is older). I've used my modem with a router since I got the modem (replaced an old Westell WireSpeed that I killed). There are several ways to run modem and router together. Which works best, which is easiest, depends upon your knowledge, and your tasks.

The point is to minimize the number of physical disconnects of cables, or number of times hitting the SS5100b power switch.
